Artist Erica Lord presents Artifact Piece, Revisited, an interpretation of James Luna’s influential performance Artifact Piece from 1987. This is the first performance of the work since Luna’s passing.
The work prompts critical reflection on the objectification and fetishization of Indigenous bodies and cultures in museums and the art world at large, while foregrounding contemporary and gendered perspectives.
It honors Luna’s significant impact on Indigenous performance art and continues the dialogue he began on representation, sovereignty, and self-determination.
This is the first of many performances, talks, workshops and events throughout Indian Theater!

Indian Theater: Native Performance, Art, and Self-Determination since 1969 brings together over 100 artworks by over 40 artists and collectives of Native American, Alaska Native, First Nations, Métis, and Inuit backgrounds in an intergenerational exhibition curated by Candice Hopkins
Across film, video, sculpture, painting, drawing, beadwork, and archival materials, the exhibition demonstrates the breadth of Native artistic practices while emphasizing performance as their generative core.
Previously exhibited at the Hessel Museum of Art, Center for Curatorial Studies Bard College in New York and at the MacKenzie Art Gallery in Canada, the exhibition concludes its tour in Santa Fe, New Mexico in what will be its most expansive iteration to date.

Curated by Candice Hopkins (citizen of Carcross/Tagish First Nation), Executive Director and Chief Curator of Forge Project, the exhibition marks a homecoming to New Mexico, following its tour in the Northeastern United States and Canada. It is grounded in a pivotal moment in 1969, when ‘Indian Theatre: An Artistic Experiment in Process’ was first published in Santa Fe at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA), the same year as the Occupation of Alcatraz by the Indians of All Tribes.

Stemming from artist Jeffrey Gibson’s presentation at the U.S. Pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale, educators convened by Portland Art Museum and SITE SANTA FE collaborated to develop free, interdisciplinary lessons accessible through the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian’s Native Knowledge 360°
(NK360°) digital platform
This initiative extends Jeffrey Gibson’s presentation not only beyond the run of the 60th Venice Biennale but also beyond the exhibition walls of the U.S. Pavilion to New Mexico, Oregon, and ✨into classrooms nationwide✨

SITE SANTA FE is pleased to announce that Ekow Eshun has been appointed curator of the 13th SITE SANTA FE International Biennial, opening in summer 2027 and on view through early 2028.
Ekow Eshun OBE is an internationally recognized curator, writer, and broadcaster. He made history as the first Black director of a major UK arts institution, serving as Director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London. As Chair of the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, he leads one of the world’s most high-profile public art commissions. He is also the curator of British Art Show 10, opening in September 2026.
Eshun’s appointment follows Cecilia Alemani’s critically acclaimed Once Within a Time, an expansive exhibition inspired by characters who inhabited, traversed, or left their mark on the Santa Fe region across the centuries. Building on this foundation, Eshun, as a London-based curator whose work spans multiple continents, will bring a global outlook to SITE SANTA FE. His Biennial will further expand the exhibition’s conceptual horizons, offering new ways of considering contemporary art’s role in shaping our understanding of identity, history, and possibility.
