Photographed Faisal for and last December for

He is one of the most inspiring young people in my life. Only 15 years old, he uses basically all his free time to help others, mostly he goes on bike rides to distribute warm food to people on the street.

Faisal had to flee Afghanistan with his family and in recent months, they have been very worried about their future in Germany because of the Taliban being invited to Germany and being regarded as a partner to negotiate about future deportations.

Yesterday I came back from reporting on Poland‘s Independence Day. For fifteen years nationalists have been taking over this event and this year it was the first time that the Polish President, Karol Nawrocki, marched with them.

Over 100 000 people came from all parts of the country, partly also from all over Europe.

When asked about the flags that clearly show Nazi symbols, three men from England corrected me, claiming they are not Nazis, but nationalists and just here to celebrate freedom.

A lot of the hate was directed towards Ukrainian and other refugees, asking for deportation as the only solution. Germans were also tackled every now and then, when yet, the march was showing the same symbols as German Nazis – also expressing a lot of Antisemitism.

Furthermore, there was a lot of hate against queer people and we as journalists were harassed by one protestor not wanting to let us walk freely.

I had never been to an equally big event that is such a depiction of fascism in every sense and am still quite shocked about what I witnessed.

Thank you for the assignment and thank you and for publishing these images

Really proud to be part of this publication about violence against women in photography alongside and 💕💕💕

Thank you so much and for including my work and Aline for finding wonderful words and including me in the process until the end!

And of course thank you for publishing such an important and vital book! 🙏

So far the book exists in French only (hoping for an English version!), but I was surprised how well I could manage… so if you had a little bit of French in school and it’s not the first time reading about patterns of patriarchal violence, you will do fine, I think:)
