I had the chance to read and learn more about his work while serving as member of the committee and external co-examiner for his excellent thesis, Transient Systems: 3D Printing of Thermoplastic Starch in Architecture.
The dissertation explored the architectural potential of biodegradable agro-polymers through large-scale digital fabrication, questioning architecture’s dependency on permanence while positioning temporality, material behavior, and scaffolding systems as active design drivers rather than limitations. Great research work, research-by-design prototyping, and a super sharp and well-written thesis. Congrats!
Benjamin presented an exceptionally thoughtful and well-developed body of work spanning theory, material research, computational methods, fabrication workflows, and architectural vision. The project navigated between experimental research and disciplinary discourse with clarity and precision.
Having known Benjamin’s work for more than a decade, it was truly rewarding to witness this milestone at ETH Zürich under the supervision of Prof. Benjamin Dillenburger and co-examiners Prof. of lab and.
Congratulations Dr. Kemper on an excellent defense and an important contribution to the evolving discourse on digital fabrication and bio-based 3D printing applications in architectural production.

A folly exploring AR-assisted assembly and chromatic disposition

The Woven Painted Assembly investigates a block-based architectural system assembled through augmented reality workflows. Each building block is individually marked and painted using AR guidance, allowing controlled variation in orientation and color across the structure. The system produces a gradual chromatic transition from interior to exterior, creating a layered visual effect that shifts with movement and viewpoint.
Blocks and their assigned colors are rotated incrementally as the assembly progresses outward, introducing surface depth through repetition and controlled deviation. Color assignment is generated computationally and transferred to physical components through an AR-based marking workflow, maintaining continuity between digital intent and on-site assembly.
The folly is designed for a site in Gallup, New Mexico, within a landscape shaped by the histories and living cultures of many Indigenous nations, including the Navajo Nation (Diné), Zuni Pueblo, and other Puebloan and Apache communities. The work draws gentle inspiration from the colors and rhythms found in regional weaving traditions and the surrounding terrain. A muted palette referencing desert soil, mesa stone, plant fibers, and naturally dyed wool is used to acknowledge cultural presence and respect the land.

A full-scale folly exploring variation and discrete shingle assembly within a shingle-based building system
This project investigates a shingle-based architectural system developed through large-format additive manufacturing. Discrete 3D-printed shingle elements aggregate into a folly-scale structure informed by teepee-like geometries and situated in the arid context of Gallup, New Mexico.
Each shingle incorporates a subtle waving pattern that increases surface stiffness while improving self-shading across the assembly. Robotic large-format additive manufacturing allows controlled variation in the angle of each shingle, enabling macro-scale shifts across the surface.
Shingle elements interlock through dowel connections and receive support from neighboring shingles below, allowing loads to be shared across the layered system. Structure, shading, and enclosure emerge through the aggregation of parts, fabrication constraints, and assembly logic.

A fluid wall–column system shaped by continuous printing paths, where toolpath-driven tectonics generate porosity and form. Variations in extrusion direction and density allow the printed surface to filter light and cast subtle, shifting shadows across the space. The work explores the relationship between tooling, material behavior, and environmental performance. The column and wall soften into the terrain, shaping shade, light, and airflow for an arid environment.
