SHIGUCHI is not a place to stay. It is a place where nature, architecture, art, fire, hot spring, and silence return the senses to where they belong.
This world was shaped by Shouya Grigg, who left the UK for Hokkaido and has spent more than thirty years in conversation with this land. He does not call SHIGUCHI a hotel. He calls it a place where nature, culture, and people reconnect, deeply.
A house built from kominka timber that has weathered 150 years and more. The old Japanese craft of shiguchi: joining wood without a single nail. The sound of trees moving in the wind. A hot spring facing Mount Yotei. The memory and art of Hokkaido, flowing through SOMOZA.
Here, the need to do something quietly disappears.
Not convenience, but space.
Not luxury, but stillness.
Not stimulation, but a single deep breath.
At SHIGUCHI, time moves the way the modern world has forgotten. And by the time you leave, it is not the memory of a trip that stays with you. It is the quiet sense of having found yourself again.
On the surface of the old timber, the years have left their mark—fine scratches scattered like forgotten characters, a script written not by hand but by the rhythm of use. Each stroke is a memory, a trace of encounter, a fragment of presence. The knots and grains of the wood, once hidden in the living tree, now speak through weathering and wear.
Beside it rests a vessel of earth, fired into permanence yet still bearing the roughness of its making. Its speckled glaze recalls rain upon stone, its irregularities a testament to the hand that shaped it. Together, the wood and the clay converse in silence: one born of the forest, the other of the soil, both transformed by fire, time, and touch.
This is wa bi: the embrace of imperfection, the reverence for what endures through age, the acceptance that beauty is not separate from wear but revealed by it. A polished surface erases the story of time; a scarred surface reveals it. In the quiet of such textures, we come closer to ourselves.
To sit with these materials is to be reminded that our own lives, too, are marked by traces—moments, encounters, and seasons that etch themselves into us. The goal is not to remain unmarked, but to become, through the passage of time, more deeply ourselves.
Bronze remembers fire.
Stone remembers the mountain.
Wood remembers the forest.
Every piece carries connection—between human and earth, past and present, presence and memory.
To gather them is not to collect, but to listen.
Here, objects are companions in dialogue, reminding us that true luxury is not abundance, but depth.
Not more, but closer.
Not decoration, but connection.

Stepping into this space is to cross from the ordinary into the extraordinary. The entrance is not merely a doorway, but a threshold: a passage from the outside world into a realm where time slows and awareness deepens.
The timber beams, stone floor, and plastered walls speak of age and permanence. The forest outside reflects in the glass and frames the artworks within, reminding each guest that Shiguchi is inseparable from the land around it.
At the window, a round stone sculpture by Nagare Masayuki sits quietly in conversation with the owner’s mixed media works on washi paper. Together, they embody the dialogue between permanence and impermanence, matter and memory. One speaks through stone, the other through pigment and paper—yet both invite stillness and reflection.
Here, objects are not decoration but companions. Rough stones, carved wood, and vessels from another age stand as guardians of memory, urging guests to pause, breathe, and open themselves to presence.
This first encounter is a quiet initiation: the beginning of a journey inward, where hospitality is not service, but connection—to nature, to craft, and to oneself.

In shadows, we find subtlety, silence, and soul.

This view of Mt. Youtei through carefully positioned glass speaks to how we navigate our own boundaries - choosing when to engage with the world and when to retreat into contemplation. The single chair isn’t just furniture; it’s an invitation to witness the mountain’s changing moods while honoring your own inner landscape.
We design these threshold moments where private meets public, where individual peace coexists with collective energy. Like the mountain appearing and disappearing through Niseko’s seasons, our need for connection and solitude shifts naturally.
True luxury lies in having the choice - to be present with others or present with yourself, both held within spaces that honor the full spectrum of human experience.
