Heard of the Planck Length but don’t really know what it is? In this video I derive the Planck Length from simple ideas in quantum mechanics and relativity.
Watch the video and find out why all physics as we know it breaks below the Planck length!
This equation is considered a significant milestone in the search for a unified theory of quantum mechanics and gravitation. Black holes are gravitational structures in General Relativity, but in this theory a black hole is just smooth and featureless – the Arctic Monkeys had it right when they said, “everything’s in order in a black hole”. This posed a big problem for thermodynamics: if black holes are very ordered, then they have no entropy, and so one could violate the second law of thermodynamics by throwing a high entropy gas into a black hole.
The Bekenstein-Hawking formula shows us that black holes do in fact have entropy, so the second law is preserved. That black holes have entropy also tells us that they need to have some kind of internal “atomic” structure, and this is a window into quantum gravity.
But the equation goes even further than that. Intriguingly, the formula shows us that the entropy is proportional to the area A of the black hole. This is very surprising. Entropy is intimately linked with information content, so what this formula is telling us is that the information stored in a black hole depends on the area of the black hole, not its volume. This is known as the “Holographic Principle” since a hologram works in this way. A hologram is a 3D image produced from a 2D object. The hologram appears 3D, but all the information required to form the hologram is stored in just 2D. It’s fascinating to think what the implications of the Holographic Principle are for our universe.
Is the reality we see a hologram?

This differential equation is perhaps one of the most versatile, ubiquitous equations of motion in physics.
You first learn this equation in the final years of high-school. At that level it’s used to describe any kind of oscillating physical system. It describes the motion of a pendulum (for small angles), the oscillations of a spring, and it can be applied to a variety of other specific examples where large objects are oscillating.
But the uses of this equation go far deeper than that. Also in this image is the Klein-Gordon equation, and a couple of equations associated with the quantum version of the simple harmonic oscillator.
It turns out that the particles that make up the world, and the quantum fields that produce them all obey variations of the simple harmonic oscillator equation.
Put simply, everything is a simple harmonic oscillator.
