Lunch & Learn at Fogo Island Central Academy.

This year, we partnered with the school to create a new guest speaker series, which invites students to workshops and talks over their lunch hour. The sessions focus on entrepreneurship, skill development, and career-building.

Recently, artist Fraser Carpenter shared her adventures to Antarctica, financial advisor Jonathan Dalton and tax professional Ashley Decker explained all things taxes, and Victoria Bailey, Economic Development & Special Projects Coordinator for the Town of Fogo Island, offered a resume workshop and highlighted summer employment opportunities.

Thank you to all speakers, students, and teachers who spent their lunch learning with our team.

Two for the books: Michael Crummey and Katherine Knight visit Fogo Island.

On May 16, award-winning author Michael Crummey shared some poetry with community members gathered at the Fogo Island Central Public Library. He read poems from “Passengers,” including one about Fogo Island. He also shared new works from an upcoming poetry book and shared insights on his writing process.

A few days later at the Punt Premises, photographer Katherine Knight shared the stories behind her new book, “BOAT: Photographs by Katherine Knight.” The book combines photographs of hand-crafted model boats with first-hand accounts from model creators and boat builders.

The afternoon event offered an opportunity for Katherine to reconnect with many community members who she met over a decade ago while filming Strange & Familiar, the documentary about the construction of Fogo Island Inn. She will be at the Fogo Island Inn Cinema tonight, Wednesday, May 27, for a special screening of the film, followed by a Q&A.
Canada's future leaders gather in Quebec City for the opening plenary of the Governor General's Canadian Leadership Conference (GGLC), powered by.

The GGLC invites participants from different regions across Canada to broaden their perspectives and enhance their leadership qualities. Each participant is assigned to a study group in a province or territory, where they will learn about the social and economic conditions of Canadian communities.

The GGLC runs from May 22 to June 5. Learn more about it at the link in bio.

Meet two of our newest team members: Amanda McGrath and Monica Sokolowski.

Both joined Shorefast in the fall of 2025, working from the Church House, one of the offices shared by team members on Fogo Island.

If anyone knows the island, it’s Amanda — she brings over two decades of experience in municipal work to Shorefast’s Accounting team. Born and raised in Joe Batt’s Arm, she lives in the community of Tilting, where she worked as Town Manager from 1999 to 2011. After amalgamation, Amanda joined the Town of Fogo Island in various roles, including Executive Assistant, Town Clerk/Treasurer, and Manager. Her favourite part of living and working on Fogo Island? “It has a lot to offer," she says, “Natural beauty, community spirit, rich cultural heritage, and economic well-being.”

Originally from Windsor, Ontario, Monica moved to Fogo Island last summer to be closer to her fiancé’s family. Like many of her colleagues, she boasts an eclectic background: a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Biochemistry, volunteer experience collecting fish samples for Fisheries and Oceans Canada, a Master in Fisheries Science from Memorial University’s Marine Institute, and work with Service Canada. We’re lucky to have her (and all her know-how) in our HR team as Shorefast’s Human Resources & Administration Coordinator. For Monica, the feeling is mutual. “I love the people I work with and feeling good about the organization I work for.”

Meet the Maker: Janet Langdon

Janet Langdon has been a part of our team for nine seasons, working across many areas of Fogo Island Workshops, from retail to shipping to her current position as Modern Textile Lead.

When we asked Jan about her favourite project during her time with us, she shared her experience designing and making the first of our contemporary quilt patterns, "Held Over Water." She collaborated with Nathan Ball (Art, Architecture & Design Coordinator) and Ernst Hupel (Design Consultant, Fogo Island Inn) to develop a pattern that expressed Fogo Island's history and architecture through the Inn's stilts.

Her perfect day on Fogo Island is a calm summer day: "I'd spent the day hiking, probably Lion's Den Trail so I could do some blueberry picking too. And of course, a summer's day wouldn't be complete without a visit to for a vanilla cone!"

On May 7, Shorefast CEO Zita Cobb was invited to speak with the Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Commerce and the Economy.

This committee in the Canadian Senate studies matters relating to banking, trade, commerce, investment, inflation, housing affordability, and Canadian monetary policy.

Her remarks brought the work of Shorefast and the Shorefast Institute for Place-Based Economies into a national conversation about the economy.

Through the story of Fogo Island, Zita shared what is possible when a community activates its own assets and what can be done to optimize the economy for more places across Canada. She highlighted the value of small and medium-sized businesses and called on the Senate to build frameworks that support them.
