So many of you have showed up in shop or purchased a mug online to honor her. As the final few leave the shelves, I want the memory of the beauty she created and who she was to stay alive.
I remember the day I met Diana. It was the summer after I opened the doors of my shop, and recently started carrying her mugs. She walked in, and we got to talking.
I asked her how she found out about the shop and she said, “these are actually my mugs that you carry over here.” And I’m like, “WHAT?!! Like, you’re THE Diana Barns?!” 🤣
She was humble, chill, and so kind. I know she is missed dearly by so many. 💔 Even though we just kept up on social media with each other, I’m so saddened to know she isn’t with us anymore.
And her work. Gosh, this mug is crafted with so much intention. It fits your hand perfectly.
The amount of lives she has touched through her creations is unmeasurable. Those who have them will have a piece of her memory alive forever. 🙏
I understand receiving a diagnosis like this is very scary and traumatic, and I truly sympathize with anyone going through it. Getting the news that Jack likely had Down syndrome was probably the hardest day of my life. It gutted me and I felt like my life as I knew it was over.
And then to make it worse, some of the medical care and advice that I received initially was cold, negative, and had painted such a sad and bleak picture of the future.
If only I knew what I know now, on the other side.
And that’s the thing about these types of scenarios. Whenever there’s a medical diagnosis, medical providers want to tell you anything and everything that could happen so you are mentally prepared. They have to make sure you understand the possible risks and outcomes. It’s like reading the list of possible side effects on a medication. They want to disclose all possibilities even if the chances may be low.
Sadly there are medical providers out there that will strongly suggest you terminate – which I believe is a very personal choice and should not be something that is pushed on anyone.
But my point is this- if I believed the very bleak picture of what Jack’s life could look like and my faith wasn’t as strong as it is, I may have not chose to bring him into the world.
The influencer posted about how Down syndrome “isn’t a blessing” and is “shitty” from a medical perspective. And that hit me hard. Because I would never use the word shitty to describe Jack. Not in a million years.
I want to say this loud and clear as somebody who is living this:
People with Down Syndrome very much deserve to be here. A medical diagnosis does not define who a person is, and does not make a life any less valuable than the next person.
I’m hoping that if more parents of kids with DS speak up so that maybe the narrative and stigma that still exists around Down syndrome will change.
