Sito was born in Calonia, Al-Quds. As a young child, she and her family fled during the 1948 Nakba and became refugees in Jordan, where she later met and married my Sido, Ibrahim. Their love built the foundation of our whole family.
In Jordan she gave birth to my mom, Samirah, and my aunts Sahar, Samar, Samia, Rima, and Suhad. In 1974, Sito and Sido moved to Chicago, where Sito gave birth to my aunts Meisoun and. She was a proud mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Sito and my aunt Lena became staples of the Mosque Foundation community in Little Palestine.
Every Saturday of my life, Sito gathered all of us for dinner and quality time together, a tradition she kept until her very last Saturday. She didn’t just raise her children; she raised us, her grandchildren, too.
She was kind-hearted and fierce at the same time, tough in the ways life required, and soft in all the ways that mattered. She was funny, quick-witted, and had a light that filled any room she was in. Her daughters built their lives around caring for her, and this week, we all feel the sharp, aching absence of her presence. Losing her hurts in a way that is hard to put into words.
She never got to return to her land in Calonia, but she was buried with soil from Calonia and Al Aqsa. We pray she is now surrounded by peace and mercy.
Thank you, Sito, for every lesson, every prayer, every laugh. Alhamdulilah for every moment with you.

On Sunday, Israel targeted and murdered Anas Al-Sharif, along with four other colleagues: Mohammed Quraiq, Ibrahim Zaher, Moamen Aliwa, and Mohammed Noufal, the only surviving staff in Gaza. Freelance photojournalist Mohammad Al-Khaldi was also killed in the same strike. These were our storytellers. The lifeline between Gaza and the rest of the world.
Not only do they kill our people, bomb our hospitals, universities, schools, ancient landmarks, mosques, and churches—they are killing those who witness these crimes against humanity and dare to speak about what they have seen. Those brave enough to hold a camera, a microphone, a pen, and tell the world the truth.
Protection of journalists is an international human right, even in war and conflict. The gross complicity of major news outlets is disturbing and disheartening. Many first downplayed Anas’s murder, stripping away his humanity to serve Israel’s narrative. Some later backtracked, but the damage was done. This is how the media helps justify genocide: by dehumanizing us, pacifying the public, and making our slaughter seem acceptable.
Do not stay complicit. Join protests being held in their honor. Make noise. Hold our news outlets accountable. For two years they have manufactured consent for this genocide through using passive language: using words like “famine” instead of showing the truth of Israel’s forced starvation; “died” instead of showing Israel targeting and killing civilians en masse; and continued repetition of Israeli state propaganda talking points that have long been proven to be false.
When you kill the storytellers, you try to kill the story. But we will not let it die. We will speak their names. We will carry their truth. Keep fighting against this genocide in any way you can think of. Stand tall and speak truth. Don’t back down. They need us. We will not stop hitting the streets and using our voices and our power. Let’s shut it down until liberation.

It’s been an honor to have my exhibit during this year, knowing that it was a place that helped healing for so many people in even some small way. Each wall on the exhibit includes different ways people find healing, including self-care and community care, spirituality, solidarity, remembrance of those we lost, and reflection.
As the exhibit closes out, and the year is coming to an end, I want to give thanks to for this beautiful opportunity to share my art in this space in the gallery they built in a community that is often cut off from resources in general, including art. The last several days, we have seen people beg and plead for this country to end the killing of people, whether it is killing an innocent man here, or whether it is fueling wars abroad that are killing massive amounts of innocent people. Marcellus knew all too well the plight of the Palestinian people. We know that the grave injustice he faced last night is tied to the systems of oppression that impact people all around the world. We are all connected.
His last written statement was “All Praise Be To Allah In Every Situation!!!” His faith in Allah is a reminder to us who believe that even if injustice is carried out in this world, there will indeed be justice in the hereafter. We are reminded of that through the unwavering faith of brothers and sisters in the face of genocide in Gaza for the last year. May Allah grant justice and freedom to all oppressed people around the world.
May Allah accept Marcellus Khaliifah Williams as a shaheed, may He make his grave spacious and full of light, and may he reach the highest level of Jannah.

As people around the world take to the streets demanding a ceasefire and an end to this genocide, the dehumanization and contempt for Palestinian life runs deep for those in power who are allowing this to continue.
Every single Palestinian who was killed had a story, dreams, futures that were ripped away by Israel’s horrific crimes against humanity.
On this Valentine’s Day, we think about all the couples and loves that were murdered:
Lulu and Ahmad got married on October 6, 2023. Rather than enjoying their honeymoon, the newlyweds were quickly displaced under fear of constant Israeli bombardments. Lulu and Ahmad were both killed together by an Israeli airstrike on December 22, 2023.
Amal and Jamal were an elderly Palestinian couple, married with seven children and dozens of grandchildren. They were the matriarch and patriarch of a large family. Amal and Jamal were killed alongside their loved ones in an Israeli airstrike on their home.
Linda and Musab were a happy, loving married couple. Musab adored his wife and daughter, and although they lived a modest life, he spoiled them with gifts when he could. Linda and Musab were killed by an Israeli airstrike on their family home. Julia survived the airstrike and is now an orphan.
There are countless stories like these. And the attacks are not letting up. A couple days ago, Israel started massacring civilians in Rafah, where about 1.5 million displaced Palestinian men, women, and children are taking refuge. Please continue the pressure to stop this genocide.
The U.S. Senate just passed a spending package that includes $14 billion more in weapons to Israel to continue arming them for this genocide against a defenseless population. Don’t look away. Our govt is funding this nightmare. Demand that your elected officials call for a permanent ceasefire now and stop funding hate and destroying love by arming Israel.
Refaat was a well-known and loved Palestinian author, poet, and English literature professor. He was also a founder of. Refaat taught hundreds of students in Gaza English as a way to help them tell their stories and connect Palestinian liberation with the liberation struggles of Black, Indigenous and colonized people around the world.
I met Refaat in 2014 during his book tour for “Gaza Writes Back,” a collection of stories from Gaza youth living under siege. Refaat taught me how important art and storytelling are as part of our resistance as Palestinians. His work profoundly impacted and inspired me.
Even under Israel’s relentless airstrikes, Refaat hopped around Gaza to find internet to be able to stay connected with his students, his friends abroad, and to take interviews to shed light about the atrocities happening in Gaza. He bravely spoke up knowing that Israel was systematically targeting journalists, academics, creatives, and all those exposing the truth. His home was already targeted and bombed in October, but he survived. This time, he didn’t.
It’s hard to believe Refaat is no longer with us. It is a painful loss. His intellect, his love for Palestine, his passion to make life better for Gaza, his beautiful care for his people, and his great sense of humor will be missed. But in his short time on earth, Refaat left a lasting legacy on all Palestinians and on the world.
Refaat, in one of his last interviews, said expo markers are all he had as his resistance. But he would never give up, and he wouldn’t want any of us to give up. As he rests, we will continue to tell our stories, to demand an end to the genocide and siege in Gaza, and to keep struggling until Palestine is free.

For 2 weeks, the Biden admin has been saying that they want to work towards a “humanitarian pause” in which there will be a short time frame in which the bombing of Gaza subsides to allow civilians to find safety. The Israeli govt has not agreed and even if they did, it is not enough when hospitals and facilities cannot function due to the blockaded flow of water, electricity, medications, and fuel, and the continued destruction of essential infrastructure.
A humanitarian pause is not enough as we are witnessing the televised suffering of premature babies who had to be taken off incubators that could not be kept running due to lack of electricity. Tens of thousands of Palestinian women are pregnant and about to give birth, and are in grave danger of staggering numbers of maternal and infant mortality in coming weeks.
While the Biden administration refuses to call for a ceasefire, the masses across the country are rising up to demand not only a ceasefire, but the end of the siege on Gaza and a free Palestine. ’s ceasefire bill went from 13 to 40 signers because of the pressure that our representatives are feeling from their constituents. From the Bay Bridge to Chicago’s Lake Shore Drive, the people are shutting it down. Mass boycotts are impacting corporations that support Israel’s ethnic cleansing. The people have made it clear: no more business as usual.
Continue calling and writing your reps. Keep hitting the streets, boycotting, and disrupting the comforts of our complicit society. Check out for action items. Your acts of solidarity make a difference. May we continue to rise up together until Palestine is free, and until we are all free.
