In 2026, Cappadocia is drawing the worldโs attention not only with its fairy chimneys and hot air balloons, but also with the transformative power of contemporary art. Directed by Enes Kaya and initiated by the Sinemasal Culture & Arts Association, the Cappadocia Biennial opened its doors on May 7 with the theme โBIRTHโ for its inaugural edition.
Taking place between May 7 and September 3, 2026, the biennial invites visitors to a unique contemporary art experience spread across various locations throughout Cappadocia, including Gรถreme, รrgรผp, Avanos, Uรงhisar, Ortahisar, Mustafapaลa, and Kayaลehir.
One of the most distinctive aspects of the Cappadocia Biennial is the strong relationship it establishes between art and geography. Bringing together 101 artworks by 109 artists from 14 countries across 23 different venues, the biennial places contemporary art within a landscape shaped by millions of years of geological formation. Valleys, fairy chimneys, caves, abandoned structures, and historical sites are transformed into exhibition spaces, creating a unique meeting point where contemporary art is embedded within nature and historical memory.
Here, art encounters nature and culture within the same geography and evolves into a language that is not only observed, but also walked through, felt, and experienced.

Kaoru Shibuta JPN
Born in Hokkaido in 1980. He graduated from Pan Make-up School in 2000 and Kanebo Make-up Institute in 2003. He grew up in the great nature of Hokkaido. He is interested in sound and improvises and synesthetics how sound appears in color and shape. He has presented his work at artist-in-residences and museums around the world, including Center for Art and Culture Espronceda Barcelona, Centre d'arts Santa Mรฒnica, Barcelona(CASM), Russian National Center for Contemporary Art (NCCA), and the Elisabeth Jones Art Center (Portland),etc.
