A Sunni Tābiʿī, Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib, witnessed this statement.
He admitted that when he first heard it, he thought:
“He is claiming knowledge of the unseen.”
But when Imam ʿAli was struck by Ibn Muljim, the meaning became clear.
This was not independent knowledge of the unseen.
It was a promise given to him by the Prophet ﷺ.
Even the narrator himself recognized this after the event occurred.
When the sword struck him in the mosque of Kufa, Imam ʿAli said:
“By the Lord of the Kaʿbah, I have succeeded.”
