SUPPORT OUR FUNDRAISER! ⚡️⚡️⚡️ Help us make an art exhibition on South Asian migrant experiences!

In Berlin you might notice— the majority of delivery riders biking around the city are South Asian. Who are these migrants and what brings them to Germany? We, a group of South Asian artists, are working on a project that explores the lives of these delivery riders. Through sound, video footage and illustration, we explore the foreign-student-to-gig-worker pipeline, the exploitative nature of these jobs, as well as the delivery rider’s strength, humanity and philosophies. It has been a privilege to get to know this community.

We have started a fundraiser to cover the production costs of the exhibition. The funds will also be used to support the Migrant Student Workers Canteen, an initiative that helps newly arrived migrants to settle in Berlin. ✨✨ We hope you donate (any amount is appreciated!) and spread the word— FUNDRAISER LINK IN BIO! 🙏🏽 And do come see the exhibition during the art festival!
I was going through my old artworks and came across this one, and have to say it remains one of my favourite album artworks to work on ⚡️It was named Aslis- the Originals- and so it made sense to draw a Mughal rock concert (don’t ask me to elaborate further) 😁 The details were so fun to think of!
So excited to share that The Biker Girls is now in Pakistan at the book store! ✨🎉🎉✨ Since the story is (unofficially) set in Pakistan, I’ve been waiting for it to reach this audience!🌟

This time when I went back home, I took some copies of the book for my friends’ children. The characters in book are named after these kids- as I explained to the real life Zoey:) The next day, her mom told me that they had read the book as a bedtime story, and real-Zoey got very excited about book-Zoey learning to ride a bike! She’d been nervous about trying, but now she asked her dad to teach her. Within a week she was zooming down her neighbourhood streets with her brother! My friend sent the photos over, and it’s really my book come to life!!! I couldn’t ask for a better moment in the life of this story! 🚲🚲🚲 💖

The book is available at online (link in bio!) and in-store. Thank you sm to Yasmeen and the Readings team for making it happen! 🙏🏾
“Auntie Kristina’s Guide to Asian American Activism” introduces young readers to “Auntie Heroes”- Asian American activists, artists and trailblazers who made history. Auntie Heroes include Yuri Kochiyama, Lily Chin, Margaret Cho, Mabel Ping-Hua Lee, Phil Yu, the Sunrise Movement, Ai-Jen Poo, Corky Lee, Mia Yamamoto, Grace Lee Boggs, Lipo and Saeng, Denise Uyehara, Alice Wong, Amy Uyematsu, Aiko Herzig-Yoshinaga, Bushra Amiwala, The Linda Lindas, Larry Itliong and Philip Vera Cruz. ✨ Alongside these heroes, the guide also presents the “Young Rebels”, a diverse range of young Asian Americans who explore allyship with other communities of color. ✨ Throughout the book, Auntie Kristina herself (in her signature outfit!) pops in to guide the way 😄

It was fun and inspiring to read about these personalities and draw their portraits. 🌟 You can find more about the book and upcoming events over at ❤️
Got my copy of Auntie Kristina’s Guide to Asian American Activism- written by performer/ activist Kristina Wong and her friends, and illustrated by me! 🌟 It’s a chunky, brightly illustrated, info-packed book offering history, activities and ways for young people to get involved and become leaders in their own communities. It’s so what I was into as tween- you can find it at all major bookstores in the US! ✨

“Activism is more than just screaming with signs—it’s also about discovering who we are, building spaces, and documenting our community.” -
Took a miniature painting workshop with the supremely talented who taught us his approach to Indian Company Painting. I painted a photo from my parent’s wedding day, and this was by far the most patience-inducing process I’ve attempted! I was told many times to slow down because I’m prone to Getting Things Done Fast. 🤪 But it was fascinating seeing the artwork take shape- the smallest amount of pigment layered made such a difference over time. Eventually I played around with the painting digitally because well, Old Habits Die Hard.

Thank you Irfan for sharing your knowledge so generously and for creating a lovely painting environment! 🙏🏾 Excited to use this technique in the future! 🖤
In stories across Asia and the Caribbean, the mythical creature called Churail, or Pichal Peri, makes an appearance. Said to resemble either an old hag or a beautiful woman with her feet turned backwards, the Churail viciously attacks and kills those she encounters on lonesome highways or dark woodlands.

According to some traditions, if a woman dies of abuse or in childbirth, she is resurrected as a Churail to exact her vengeance. In a time of overwhelming and systemic attacks against the rights and safety of women and girls around the world, turning to supernatural forces feels like one way to overcome feelings of despair.

The artwork shows a congregation of Churail, collectively making lists of those who wronged them. It is meant to create discomfort in those accustomed to cruelty towards the innocent, and give assurance to survivors that there will be justice.

This was a bit cathartic to draw; made as contributing art for the Illustration and Folklore in South Asia Symposium. Thank you for including me! 🙏🏾
Book Announcement! 💓 I’ve written and drawn a children’s book that comes out this September! 🥹

This has to be my longest running project- it all started when I made street art of a woman riding a bike in my city, Lahore. Seeing a woman cycling isn’t common in these parts, and the artwork was meant to show a woman living life on her own terms. This biker girl inspired me to get a bicycle of my own... If I could imagine it, I had to try it. But once I was out cycling on the streets, it was pretty nerve-racking! It made me draw another piece of artwork showing a girl cycling as onlookers stood by, scandalized.

I realized that for many people around the world, riding a bike is one of the earliest ways of experiencing freedom. I am often let down by the rules I grew up with, so this is my way of imagining a different childhood- one where three little girls take on these streets and change them for the better. The book is aimed at 5-8 year olds- the same age group many of my friends’ kids are now.:) I hope the book finds its intended audience (of girls and boys!) and helps them take a leap of faith. ✨
.
The book is open for pre-orders at all major book stores (I am so excited and nervous 😅😭!)- link in bio!
.
Published by Nancy Paulsen at art directed by Kristin Boyle, supported by Lindsey Andrews 💕 Endless thanks to these ladies who have brought this book to life!
