That year I graduated college and turned down a full time job offer. I worked multiple jobs through school to save $10,000. It took me 5 years. The money lasted an entire year of traveling on a pretty extreme budget.
I told Josh my big plans and he said “I’m in” and saved up before quitting his job at the same time I graduated.
It made for quite a few innovative & funny moments! But it makes travel in 2026 that much sweeter.

Also forgot to mention that I use the 46L carry one, which is my favorite go-to travel backpack.
Some of the best gear & clothing i brought:
• packable puffer
• packable rain jacket
• Linen pants from on Etsy (i have their pants in 4 colors!)
• hiking pants (which i also own in 4 colors)

I read my first travel blog by in 2012. Before influencers and TikTok, her blogs were my escape into far away lands and life beyond a conventional 9-5. At the time, i had never left North America. The world seemed so big and incredibly untouchable.
In 2025 i visited 21 countries and 6 continents. I hosted 3 trips on 3 continents. The more you get out there the more you realize how small the world really is. And how good most people are.
This year i spent more time traveling and less time with a camera lens attached to my face. How it should be.
2026 goals:
•Slow down
•Consume a disgusting amount of bread
•Finish my memoir
•Continue to get hate comments on the internet
•Live laugh love
•Teach my cats the word ‘poutine’
•Don’t take anything too seriously
See you in 2026!!!

To answer some common questions:
•All of our miles were with airlines. We saved up our miles for 4 years to make it happen. I own the United Club MileagePlus card and Josh has the United Explorer Card. Everything except our mortgage goes on these cc for points, which is where more of our miles came from.
•The best way to budget travel these days is to be loyal to a single airline. As someone who use to solely book and fly budget airlines, I have saved over ten THOUSAND dollars on flights solely by loyalty to United.
•We had NO plan heading into this, which cost us some flights and miles in some places. But it also gave us some solid last minute flight deals!
•I originally hoped to do this for under $1,000 per person. We went slightly over that at $1,393 per person.
•Outside of flights we spent about 12-14k on this trip (total). We stayed mostly in and hotels. It was definitely not as “budget” as some of our past trips.
•Nothing about this trip was stressful. Flexible flights, flexible plans, flexible destinations all made it seem incredibly easy.
•United Airline miles also work for all their partner airlines, which is the Star Alliance network. All major airlines in the U.S. also have a hefty network of international partner airlines.
•The one downside is that your airline status can suffer if you use miles to book international flights. Reward flights on partner airlines do not count toward PQF, which is a major factor contributing toward airline status. I am losing a tier of status with United next year because of this, even though this year had my highest count of flights to date (still totally worth it!).
•We spent $2541.07 on accommodation during this trip. This does not include a 4-night stay in an overwater bungalow in the Maldives, which we splurged on for our 5 year wedding anniversary.

In total we took 19 flights, which equaled 290,200 miles each (580,400 miles total). This included a splurge to fly United Polaris Business on our last leg back to the United States.
We totaled all of our taxes, fees, and out of pocket flights, including one pricey $700 flight to New Zealand. In total, the 19 flights and 1 business class ticket around the world cost us $1,585. Less than a typical international round-trip flight.
We saved a combined 646,000 miles for this trip, and came home with over 100,000 to spare.
Here is a photo from each country of the trip:
1. Cueva del Hundidero, Spain
2. Sahara, Morocco (don’t let this picture fool you i fell off this camel)
3. South Island, New Zealand
4. Raymond Island, Australia
5. South Ari Atoll, Maldives
6. Colombo, Sri Lanka (only picture i took eating buttered noodles after being sick)
7. Xiangshan Six Boulders, Taiwan
8. Mount Fuji, Japan
9. Bangkok, Thailand (visiting my cousin!)
10. Candi Dasa, Indonesia

On August 21st we headed out to Assiniboine Lake for a short trip. I was anxious about leaving the cats in the camper overnight but wanted to get out in a quick 14-hour backpacking trip.
Josh’s objective was Mount Assiniboine in Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park, so we agreed that he would leave for the climb at sunrise and I would head back to the trailhead, a short 4.8 miles away from the lake where we camped.
Living around Yellowstone, spending the night in thick grizzly country was nothing new to us. We’ve spent the equivalent to months in the backcountry sharing territory with them. I have a profound respect for the wilds of the mountains, and I still would rather take my chances alone in the wilderness than alone as a woman in a city.
Josh left around sunrise and my plan was to leave by 8. I decided to hang around a little longer than planned. It was a beautiful morning, and the sun was just about to hit the lake. I knew bears were more active in the dawn hours. The cats would be fine and it was probably smarter for me to wait the extra hour before heading into the woods. I was hoping the sunshine would dry out the condensation collected on the tent overnight before packing up and heading out.
I heard nothing all morning besides the trickles of a nearby stream. Sitting in the tent getting ready to go outside for a bathroom break, I suddenly heard a large step outside. Instantly, I knew. I quickly took the safety off the bear spray and sat in silence for a few seconds, hoping I was wrong. But then, in the most horror movie way, the shadow of a grizzly claw appeared on the side of the tent.

The two of us left camp on the Cowlitz Glacier at 1:00am and made the summit shortly before 7:50. I had worried for weeks that my altitude sensitivity would ruin our attempt.
Aside from the fact I did end up puking directly in the middle of the summit crater (cute), this was one of the most rewarding days. I'll never forget traversing the upper glaciers of Rainier at sunrise. She was a beautiful climb. Thankful to live a life with moments like these.
