“Often, growth is not a clear and smooth process. It might mean starting over again and again... But it is precisely at these moments that we begin to understand the true meaning of learning. We learn to revise, to start over, to listen to feedback, and to admit, ‘I don’t know yet.’ And these seemingly imperfect moments are the traces left by growth.”

From faculty to students, Opera Parallèle’s production of Doubt celebrates the continued collaboration and vibrant artistic connection between the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Opera Parallèle.

SFCM faculty members Matthew Worth and Rhoslyn Jones take the stage as Father Flynn and Sister Aloysius, under the baton of SFCM’s Director of the New Music Ensemble, Nicole Paiement and alum Donald Lee III. The collaboration continues behind the scenes and in rehearsal with Associate Director of the New Music Ensemble Jacques Desjardins, accompanist Keisuke Nakagoshi, and SFCM voice student Grace Sawyko covering Sister Aloysius. We are thrilled to have the SFCM community so deeply represented throughout this production.

“It meant a lot to me that SFCM encourages us to confidently be ourselves and perform pieces we genuinely connect with in our recitals. I’m especially appreciative of the opportunity to perform a piece that represented my Filipino heritage, and I loved that my recital program reflected who I am as both a musician and a person. I believe it’s so important for musicians to have the creative freedom to express their individuality, and SFCM truly fosters an environment where students can grow artistically while feeling confident in their authentic selves.” - Aaliyah Capili, voice student

Congratulations to 2022 graduate Julia Pyke, who will join the Oregon Symphony this fall as Principal Flute!

Pyke is well-known as one of SFCM’s social media stars, with her videos on the Conservatory TikTok page accruing more than 3.8 million views.

“As a student, people ask you, ‘What are the top five orchestras you’d want to play in?’ And for me, seriously, Oregon would have been one of them... The audition got posted earlier this year, and I was like, ‘I’m going to go all out for this one. No holds barred; I’m going to put my all into this.’”

Hi! 👋 I’m Katherine Siochi, Principal Harp of the San Francisco Symphony and Gold Medalist of the 10th USA International Harp Competition, and I teach harp at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Even after winning an orchestra job right out of school, I realized I was missing many of the necessary skills needed to navigate the industry - particularly how to advocate for myself and be paid fairly. While traditional conservatory training is highly effective at teaching you how to master your instrument (and I’m incredibly grateful for my training!), I had to figure out the business side of music by trial and error.

At SFCM, my goal is to bridge that gap completely. My teaching philosophy is built on a dual-focus: we aim for the highest possible standards of artistic excellence, while simultaneously learning the practical skills necessary to sustain it. Beyond just playing the harp, we have honest conversations about practicing effectively, negotiating contracts, setting fair rates, managing performance anxiety, navigating perfectionism, and more. I’m deeply invested in my students’ success, not just as harpists, but as resilient, well-equipped professionals and individuals.

🪉If you’re considering undergraduate or graduate studies and want to learn more about what it’s like to study here, let’s connect. Send me a DM or an email at to set up a trial lesson.

Congratulations to The Onde Trio! After meeting at SFCM Pre-College in 2023, the ensemble had a banner year in 2024 and advanced to the semifinals in the prestigious Fischoff Competition.

"Onde" is the Italian word for "waves," which has a double resonance for the Trio: Aside from being a nod to their shared Bay Area background, as Black and Latinx musicians, it also references their hair.

At the link in bio, read how "coaching and masterclasses with world-class chamber musicians" at SFCM helped them develop their collaborative voice.
