Born Josephine Donna Smith, a niece of Mormon founder Joseph Smith, she came west with her family during California’s Gold Rush. Coolbrith was fifteen and living in Los Angeles when her poetry was first published. After she divorced her husband at age twenty-one, she changed her name to Ina Donna Coolbrith, concealed her Mormon ancestry, and moved to San Francisco, where her celebrity as a poet grew.

At 5:12am on April 18, 1906, disaster struck. For approximately 60 seconds, a 7.9 magnitude earthquake rattled San Francisco, unleashing destruction on a scale never before seen in the United States. The violent shaking leveled buildings, ruptured gas and water mains, and set the stage for an even greater catastrophe: three days of uncontrollable fires that destroyed 80% of the city.
To help us share the story of the morning that changed San Francisco forever, we joined Marc Igler from. As a lead for their 1906 Earthquake & Fire Tour, Marc walks attendees through ground zero where the ruins met the recovery.
Amidst the rubble on Market Street stood Lotta’s Fountain. Located at the intersection of Market, Geary, and Kearny Streets, Lotta’s Fountain is one of San Francisco’s most enduring landmarks and a living memorial. Originally built in 1875, the fountain became the “city’s bulletin board”, serving as a vital sanctuary where survivors gathered to leave notes for loved ones and search for the missing.
To this day, Lotta’s Fountain continues to bring our community together.
2026 marks the 120th Anniversary of the 1906 Earthquake and Fire. Falling on Saturday, April 18th, the free, pre-dawn Commemoration Ceremony invites residents, families, and history buffs to gather at Lotta’s Fountain to honor our city’s resilience and soul.

A shared vision between the Downtown SF Partnership and, Landing at Leidesdorff, located at the intersection of Commercial and Leidesdorff St in the Financial District, brings history to the surface. From the 150-foot “Beyond the Sea” mural to the waterfront ground graphics and city map with an overlay of the original Long Wharf, every detail tells the story of Leidesdorff’s remarkable impact.
In the 1840s, Leidesdorff helped shepherd SF into existence, establishing its first public school, hotel, and commercial warehouse. His untimely death in 1848 meant he never saw his new home grow into the great metropolis we know today.
