I've started to realise that maybe happiness was never the answer.
Maybe what I've really been searching for all these years isn't happiness at all.
Maybe it's peace.

One thing I do regret this year is not spending more time photographing the stags while they were still growing their antlers. The reality is that we'll likely lose a few familiar faces this season, I may have already missed the chance to capture their final velvet portraits.
I'm especially hoping Split makes it through another year. He's shown incredible growth again this season but every year I wonder when his time will come... i have still yet to get a good photo of him this year.

He held his territory exceptionally well. Many rival stags passed through his patch on their way to the ponds, but time and again he successfully drove them off and defended his ground.
It was also a fantastic spot for photography. The bracken stayed low, giving me clear, unobstructed views, and I spent countless hours over several days photographing him. The biggest challenge was finding ways to create different images because despite being taken days apart many of the photos looked almost identical.
If he's still around this year, I wouldn't be surprised to find him back in exactly the same place defending the same territory once again.

I don’t usually shoot in harsh sunlight, I’ve always preferred overcast skies, or even better, rain. That’s where I feel most at home with my photography.
But I’m posting this because it’s different from what I’d normally share... and maybe that’s exactly why I should.

I call him Wee Willy Winkle. During one rut, as he was bellowing his manhood happened to be on full display and for some reason that name just popped into my head. Ever since then, whenever I see him that's who he is to me.
When I'm out searching for stags, I can usually identify them from a long distance just by their antlers. I don't mean counting points or tines most of the time it's simply the overall shape. Even from far away, I can tell who's who. And whenever I spot this old boy, I find myself saying, "Ah, that's Wee Willy Winkle."
A strange name to some, perhaps, but I'm so used to it now that I couldn't call him anything else. 🤣

Feels like only yesterday I was out photographing the rut. Last year was absolutely crazy, especially after one of the old boys died in the pond. Nature can be brutal, but every season brings a new story.

I think I finally know why.
When I'm out photographing deer, it usually involves a lot of walking. Carrying my 400mm f/2.8 for hours is exhausting. Eventually the fatigue sets in and once it does everything becomes uncomfortable. What should be enjoyable starts to feel like hard work.
Taking the Sony out felt completely different. There was no fatigue, no aching shoulders, no feeling like I was dragging myself around. I actually enjoyed using it. Of course, part of that could be because it's new to me. Learning something different is always exciting.
But for once, the experience felt relaxed. The images almost didn't matter. It was simply fun to experiment with the Sony and see what kinds of photos I could create.
For the first time in a while, photography felt enjoyable again.

At first glance, the shot seemed unremarkable, the angle lacking. But something told me not to walk away. I circled, searching for the perfect vantage. With every step, the stag remained motionless, granting me precious time to reposition. In moments like these I’ve learned never to settle—sometimes, the right angle can transform the ordinary into something extraordinary.
And then, as if on cue, the stag turned. Our eyes met, the tension in the air thick with anticipation. Suddenly, he let loose a thunderous roar that echoed through the woods, primal and raw. In that instant, I knew—this was the shot. The culmination of hours of waiting, of battling the elements, of persistence. It all but arguably led to my best head-on bellowing capture to date.
All of the images I've taken of deer with bracken on their antlers has always been side on, this year that changed. On a few occasions i finally managed to get the head-on shot where one looked directly at me, this one being the best one. I watched this stag (Nicknamed Split) bellow his heart out and cover himself with bracken multiple times to make him self look bigger and stronger to the rival stag he was parallel walking with. Neither of the two were backing down any time soon. They did eventually clash antlers and begin the pushing match, who will be the one that out powers the other and finally settle this dispute once and for all?!
"Split" seems to be one of the most brave stags around here, that probably explains how and why he got his injury a few years ago. He doesn't back down. Most of the other stags run away when the bigger boys come and chase them off but not Split. He's down for a fight & for that i admire his courage & confidence. He's one badass MF.
