A Shattered City Asks for Its Sacrifice to Be Repaid
Daraya is a roughly 30-minute drive from central Damascus. But it is a world apart, one of a string of largely Sunni Muslim, working-class communities ringing the capital that formed the backbone of the opposition in the region to Mr. al-Assad.
The regime, determined to make places like Daraya unlivable, subjected them to its brutal wrath. They were barrel-bombed, shelled, sometimes gassed, besieged, starved and depopulated, then stripped of virtually anything portable.
Today, much of it lies in ruins.
Some residents have returned, settling in buildings without roofs or windows, living among debris, cracks, and exposed rebar. Basic infrastructure — electricity, water, healthcare — remains largely absent.
Just a few kilometers away, central Damascus appears almost untouched. The contrast between the intact city and the devastation of Daraya illustrates the deep fractures left by war.
The destruction here is not only physical. It reflects the disruption of lives, communities, and memory.

The Haredi Draft: Three Young Men, Three Paths
Israel’s Supreme Court has ruled that ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) men must now serve in the military, ending a decades-old exemption. The decision has sparked fierce debate—some see it as a civic duty, others as a threat to faith.
I followed three young men navigating this shift:
Haim Krausz – A yeshiva student who sees the draft as a danger to Judaism. “We are willing to die to not go to the army,” he says.
Itamar Greenberg – A conscientious objector who spent 197 days in military prison. He opposes both the draft and the occupation.
Yechiel Wais – Once a Haredi boy watching jets from afar, now an aircraft technician in the Israeli Air Force. “We are the new pioneers,” he says.
This is more than a legal ruling—it’s a battle over identity, faith, and the future of Israeli society.

Once the outcast of German politics, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) is surging in the polls—thanks in part to a new wave of young, social-media-savvy activists.
With an anti-immigrant and nationalist stance, the party has gained traction ahead of Sunday’s election, earning nods from figures like Elon Musk and U.S. political leaders. Their unapologetic, confrontational approach is winning votes and followers.

Russian actor Yura Borisov has reached a new milestone in his career with an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his extraordinary performance in Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning film Anora. Borisov’s portrayal of Igor, a complex and deeply human character, has captivated audiences and critics alike, earning him international recognition.

I had the pleasure of working with Yura during the shoot of Petrov’s Flu with the visionary director. His dedication, talent, and collaborative spirit on set were truly inspiring, and it’s no surprise to see him achieving such well-deserved success.

Congratulations to Yura Borisov on this incredible achievement! 🎉

A week after Cyclone #Chido tore through the northwest of the French overseas territory in the Indian Ocean, the area’s devastated towns have still seen no sign of help.
Kawéni has been pulverized by the Cyclone in #Mayotte, wiped off the face of the earth. Where, only a few days ago, a #shantytown comprised of #bangas – precarious huts – stood, all that now remained were bare hilltops, scattered heaps of tangled wood and sheet metal, strewn over several square kilometers.
Undocumented #migrants make up a large share of shantytown residents, and the French authorities say they are less likely to seek medical attention for fear of being arrested and deported.

What does the interplay between architecture and finance reveal about a society? How much government regulation does a city need? Where is the line between too little and too much? And what does it mean for a city when state institutions completely fail as regulatory control bodies?
