I found some photos in my archives from a small pop-up exhibition of this project in Riga (Latvia) within Riga Photomonth 2021. Organisers pasted the photos onto the window of an abandoned cafe; I love that kind of punk-style format. Three days later, not a single photo remained. People didn’t vandalize them; instead, they carefully peeled them off and took them home. I don’t mind at all.
I think it would be easy to do something similar here in Berlin. And, of course, I’m thinking about how this project could turn into a great book!

“I like practicing BD_M but I have never worked in this sector, I have had my own experiences. It is a world that fascinates me and from which I can learn a lot, I am constantly looking for freedom and truth; I think with sex and pain we can access different realities. And I can definitely compare this act with painting.
I discovered the image of Madonna next to me on the bedside table when I opened my eyes after a surgery to reduce my breast size (I was tall and weighed too little for the size of my breasts, it wasn’t proportional to my body, I suffered physical problems, I did boxing and had to stop, it was the object of body shaming by others for me since I was in middle school). Crucifixes and sacred papers are often found in Italian hospitals. I really liked it and decided to keep it despite the fact that I’m not Christian and not even baptized - which is rare in Italy - I’m a daughter of Satan. Madonna was, first of all, a friend to me, a woman, a supporter after the surgery, not the idolized Mother of God.
Stones are sacred objects to me, they have an energy within them that is activated when you have the inner peace needed to welcome it. My heart stone is amethyst, because of the purple color I associate it with my personality and because of the magic it holds. I believe that everyone considers themselves more similar to one stone rather than another, it is a natural and spontaneous instinct.
I usually look back at drawings and objects I owned as a child, it fascinates me because I think the truth resides in children. I often make connections with my life now and always discover something new that amazes me. The fairy is the little me who already knew she didn’t belong to this world, but once born here she should try to fly even if attached to the earth. It is the meeting point between body and soul. I have two fairy wings tattooed on my back, this is because I grew up continuing to identify with a fairy.
I think my pieces are, on the one hand, a metaphor for light. But on the other hand, they show my Berlin demons dancing with me.”

I write a lot on random sheets and in my notebook which is at the same time my agenda and my photo album. Wherever I am, I want to be able to access some memories as well as things I find aesthetic. I mainly take analogue photographs.
The loveletter I carry with me probably because my wallet is the safest place not to lose it. The letter as such is not super significant, it’s just a basic and cute note my partner gave to me for some birthday, written in many languages. Given that he is not so much into words as I am, I appreciate the letter even more.
It’s good to have a cup with you for a drink to go - when you want to avoid waste or when you are in a hurry in the morning and can’t finish your tea at home. Very good thing for a young teacher who enjoys sleeping a little bit more in the mornings.
I am wearing different earrings because not all of my earrings are pairs (I lost one, I found one, somebody gave one of theirs to me and we share the pair) - and because it is an easy way to look unconventional.
In my free time I have been doing climate activism (blockades, demonstrations) next to my studies for the last six years. Yes, I do find it important to do everything we can in order to protect what we need for a good and healthy life in freedom for as many beings as possible on this planet. Now that right wing populism becomes more and more normal, I consider it important to show in public (for example with stickers) that we won’t get used to this and that our values (humanism, respect for the constitution) remain stable.
In 2018, after highschool, I was working in the Netherlands with disabled people and doing night shifts in an anarchist bar and cultural space run by volunteers. With the red sheet, you could get drinks for free. I still have some free drinks left in case I come back to this place.
Last but not the least - I am usually more focused and also happier when I don’t use digital devices/media too often. I still have a smartphone but I try to limit the scrolling time and I also don’t have instagram.»

The first heroine, Lida—a refugee from Kharkiv (pictured here)—has been using dr_gs for 23 years, and her addiction has only intensified since arriving in Berlin. She showed me photographs of herself from 2020, and I was simply stunned by the extent to which dr_gs had ravaged her body. Staring out from those photos was a completely different woman.
As we were having coffee, she told me that our meeting might be a sign—and a source of great inspiration—for her to quit. She promised that, tomorrow, she would finally tell her doctor that she is ready to start rehabilitation.
I hope she will do that.

“I studied international management and specialized in marketing. Everything was fine, but I met a bad boy. We started to sell h_sh together. Finally I was caught with stuff and went to prison for 6 months. After I was released my university did not take me back. And to be honest I did not want to get back, I was so ashamed that everybody knew what I was doing. I also lost opportunity to intern at Milka company. It was a pity since I was always a big fan of their products. I decided to change the country for studies. Basel Uni accepted me and it seemed like a new chapter but the dr_g problem was still there - I was already addicted.
After my graduation I moved to Berlin for work. Here my addiction became a really big problem since the dr_gs are easy to get in this city and I could not resist. They are just following me everywhere or maybe I follow them? Here I was arrested for dr_g possession and again went to prison for a year. I gave birth to one of my children behind the bars who was taken from me by the decision of the court. In 2001 I lost my leg due to her_in and at the moment I cannot approach my children. They now live with my parents in Freiburg. Freaking nightmare, isn’t it?
My man who gave me all this fine jewelry including the necklace with the heart is taking care of me. He is a very good man. Important to mention that he is clean for 6 weeks. I am proud of this gentleman. Hopefully I will also be able to make it. Will I? I live just near the spot - dr_gs are in front of my door. But I definitely want to approach my children in a sober condition. They deserve it. And I want to live with them. It’s not nice to just come and go in my children’s lives as it fits me.”
“My entire free time revolves almost exclusively around concerts. Mostly hardcore, but also punk, metal, thrash, and other genres.
I discovered the hardcore scene when I was going through a severe identity crisis. I was addicted to hero_n and came to Berlin with my boyfriend for inpatient addiction treatment. During this time, I had to reinvent myself, and through my boyfriend, I discovered hardcore. It’s carried me through this difficult and stressful time, right up to this day.
I go to the gigs as a fan, but also as a photographer, usually accompanied by my boyfriend and sometimes my son. He’s 21, pretty smart, and a so-called vegan straight edger.
I’ve met so many great people in the music scene that meeting them at gigs is always like a family celebration. Photography was initially just a memory, but over time, it’s become a great passion. I try to capture what I see and what I feel at the concert. It’s the moment when I feel like I’m in the right place at the right time. It just makes me happy.
I always wear black (sometimes with a bit of color) and all my stuff is also black. I can never find anything in my pockets because everything is black. Maybe it’s due to the music scene, but maybe it’s also my work as a designer. I’m very visually sensitive, and it irritates me when I’m dressed too colorfully. My style is a mix of hardcore, gothic, and punk... depending on how I’m feeling. It’s always an expression of my emotional state. In any case, I feel the need not to fit into the mainstream externally because I don’t fit in internally.
The Swiss Army knife is a Christmas present from my boyfriend. He collects knives and had it engraved with my stage name, Julinka. I love it, but since the strict gun laws in Berlin, I can’t take it with me very often.
I still carry the deposit chips with me because I’m sometimes too lazy to return the cups at concerts. And I imagine I’ll be able to redeem them again someday.”
