The invited artists reject categorization and do not form a community, but rather a constellation of autonomous trajectories that unsettle hierarchies — of gender, of territory, of legitimacy — that break open the boxes, refuse fixed identities. Their works are active anomalies — disruptions in the framework, viruses in the narrative machine of art as it is still too often imagined in Paris.

Paris is Out of Joint questions what Paris is becoming, as it sheds its contours, its centers, and the illusion of a singular identity. No longer a radiant center, but redefined by those whom history had tried to keep at a distance. The banlieue — a political invention designed to reinforce the center — becomes the beating heart of renewal. The lines of the périphérique no longer contain anything: they rupture under the pressure of artists who persist in spite of erasure. The body of the city warps, its skin cracks. Paris becomes a receptacle, a site for the production of resistance, a terrain for thought in glitch.

.

SEPTIEME Paris a le plaisir d’annoncer le vernissage du group show, Paris is Out of Joint.

.

SEPTIEME Paris is pleased to announce the opening of the group show Paris is Out of Joint.
Paris is Out of Joint brings together artists who glitch the city — its narratives, its contours, its hierarchies. Echoing Paul B. Preciado’s Dysphoria Mundi, the exhibition captures a tipping point: that of a fractured Paris, where the lines of the périphérique symbolically explode under the claimed right to inhabit space differently. Their works disrupt control signals, refuse fixed identities, and subvert the smooth promises of diversity or inclusion to reveal what truly resists: a way of existing without permission.

By commissioning portraits of his family, Elliott Barnes composes an intimate atlas, crossed by this current. It is a founding gesture: one of chosen transmission. The act of commissioning—historically reserved for the elite—becomes here an act of repair. Family representation is no longer confined to official memory: it reinvents itself as a river of personal narratives.

In his floating portraits, Didier Viodé explores erasure as an act of power. His faces emerge and vanish at the edges of representation, reminding us that Black history cannot be told from a single perspective but exists within a constellation of narratives and silences. Far from being fixed, his figures resist capture, reaffirming the right to exist beyond imposed boundaries.

.

Each work calls upon paper as a site of insistence, of anchoring. Through it, the artists resist the erasure of bodies and memories, the disappearance of territories, the erosion of time. They create images, surfaces, and traces that, when woven together, sketch out a networked map of struggles and narratives. Echoing the writings of Édouard Glissant, for whom resistance lies in the right to opacity and in the complexity of beings and cultures, this exhibition stitches together fragments of stories and materials. It rejects simplification and lingers on details—on what does not shout but persists.

.

To resist is to take a stance, but also to inhabit the space of doubt. It is, as Jacques Rancière suggests, a way of “redistributing the sensible”, shifting the boundaries of what can be seen, spoken, or represented. This Paper Project Room aligns itself with that movement: not as a fixed display, but as a space in transformation—crossed by voices that intertwine and respond to one another, where works are regularly re-hung, removed, added, forming a living, sensitive atlas, a dynamic cartography of resistance.

.

PROJECT ROOM: AN ATLAS OF RESISTANCE a group show with Joël Degbo, Didier Viodé, Courage Hunke et Férielle Doulain-Zouari open until April 24th 2025 at SEPTIEME Paris.

Throughout the history of fights for justice, the sheet of paper has been a site of resistance. As the medium of manifestos, pamphlets, and clandestine letters, it embodies both the fragility of action and the power of ideas. Here, in this Project Room bringing together the works of Joël Degbo, Férielle Doulain-Zouari, Courage Hunke, and Didier Viodé, paper becomes a shifting terrain where the act of resistance is replayed—not in spectacle, but in the infinitesimal, in the repetition of gestures, in the accumulation of traces.
