The new spaces of the Scuola Normale in the Palazzo della Canonica, inaugurated yesterday, are the result of a long process of planning and restoration.
The works involved the east wing of the building, which is now dedicated to housing part of the Scuola Normale's library collections, as well as new areas for study and research.
Behind the rooms that from today become part of the Library's daily life lie the work and expertise of many professionals, including those from the SNS Building and Maintenance Area, who oversaw the recovery and enhancement of a complex of medieval origin, later redesigned by Giorgio Vasari.
The first photo tells the story of what usually remains outside the frame: the collaboration, reflection and discussion that accompanied the transformation of the spaces.

Anna Foa, one of Italy's most esteemed contemporary historians, will be the next guest of the series La Normale delle Idee, in a discussion with the historian Arturo Marzano, a lecturer at the University of Pisa in History of the Middle East and in History of International Relations. After the aperitif, the evening will conclude at 9 p.m. with the showing of "Il male non esiste" ("Evil does not exist") by Mohammad Rasoulof, a film in four episodes and the winner of the Golden Bear at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival.
The event is organized in collaboration with the Cautha Cultural Association.

In occasione dell’80° anniversario della nascita della Repubblica Italiana, le studentesse e gli studenti partecipanti avranno l’opportunità di discutere con Marta Cartabia, Professoressa di Diritto costituzionale presso l’Università Bocconi ed ex Presidente della Corte Costituzionale.
L’incontro coinvolgerà tutti i partner della rete MERITA: in presenza a Pisa, presso la Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, con la partecipazione della Scuola Normale Superiore, e da remoto per la Scuola Galileiana di Studi Superiori, il Collegio Superiore dell’Università di Bologna e la Scuola Superiore di Studi Avanzati Sapienza, impegnati negli stessi giorni nell’ultimo residenziale del progetto.
Un momento di riflessione condivisa sui valori costituzionali e sulla cittadinanza, a conclusione di un percorso che continua a promuovere un accesso equo e consapevole alla formazione universitaria.
"Social Movement Studies in Intense Times" è stato anche un omaggio al contributo scientifico di Donatella Della Porta, docente SNS di Scienza politica e direttrice del Center on Social Movement Studies (COSMOS), in occasione del suo pensionamento. Chi ha partecipato al convegno ha raccontato come l’incontro con il suo lavoro abbia contribuito a orientare percorsi di ricerca, stimolare nuove domande e costruire reti internazionali di collaborazione.
Dal 3 al 5 giugno, tra l’Ospedale degli Innocenti, Palazzo Strozzi e Palazzo Vegni, il convegno ha affrontato alcuni dei temi centrali della contentious politics, in particolare il ruolo dei movimenti sociali in un contesto segnato da policrisi.

Laureate e laureati provenienti da tutta Italia hanno approfondito, nel corso di cinque giornate, politiche regionali, modelli gestionali, pratiche museologiche, sostenibilità e accessibilità, con un’attenzione particolare alle sfide della digitalizzazione. «Questo corso intende abilitare giovani che si vogliono affacciare al mondo del museo verso la specificità e peculiarità dell'istituzione museali in Toscana, che prevedono non solo grandi musei, ma anche istituzioni meno note ma altrettanto interessanti per quanto riguarda la governance della comunicazione e la gestione dei beni culturali» (Gianfranco Adornato, docente SNS di Archeologia classica)
Il percorso ha alternato lezioni, laboratori e visite sul campo e ha offerto strumenti per ripensare il museo come bene comune. In particolare, la visita al MAEC (Museo dell'Accademia Etrusca e della Città di Cortona) ha rappresentato un momento centrale, in cui chi ha partecipato ha potuto mettere alla prova le conoscenze acquisite, attraverso l'analisi di un caso concreto con proposte di valorizzazione.
La Summer School, organizzata dalla Scuola Normale Superiore, si è svolta presso il Palazzone di Cortona (AR) dall’1 al 5 giugno 2026.

Today the Scuola Normale is hosting a delegation of representatives of the institutions that comprise Paris Sciences et Lettres (PSL), a partner university of the European alliance EELISA, of which the Normale is also a member.
The initiative, which is intended for technical and administrative personnel, offers an opportunity for discussion as to practices, organisational models and aspects of life at the academic institutions.
After visiting the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna on 4th June, today the delegation is at the Normale for a day of meetings focussing on the SNS and its premises and activities.
15 giovani ricercatrici e ricercatori, provenienti dall’Italia, dall’Europa e dagli Stati Uniti, si sono confrontati con le realtà museali greche. I temi trattati hanno spaziato dalla museografia all’archeologia, dall’architettura alla comunicazione del patrimonio culturale.
Hanno organizzato la School Gianfranco Adornato, docente SNS di Archeologia classica, Emanuele Papi, docente di Archeologia romana alla Scuola Archeologica Italiana di Atene, e Alessio Galli, PhD SNS in Scienze dell’antichità.

Il focus all’inizio dei miei studi era sulle teorie estetiche; poi, grazie soprattutto a un corso su Michel Foucault che mi ha incuriosito ad approfondirlo, e alla sua opera ""Il potere psichiatrico", ho iniziato a interessarmi al tema e alla critica della psichiatrizzazione. Grazie a questo interesse ho scoperto altre realtà pisane in cui ho potuto confrontarmi con esperienze molto concrete. Mi interessava capire come alcuni temi teorici potessero entrare in relazione con il reale.
In Normale ho trovato spazio anche per coltivare la mia passione per il cinema, grazie a corsi che esploravano anche il linguaggio cinematografico e alle attività della rassegna Il Cinema della Normale. Quest’anno, per l'edizione dedicata all’onirico nel cinema, ho proposto il film "Orfeo" di Virgilio Villoresi e abbiamo invitato il regista; poterlo intervistare è stato uno dei momenti più belli di questa esperienza.
Il confronto con i e le docenti è stato molto importante fin dal primo anno, perché mi ha aiutata a immaginare più concretamente cosa potessi fare dopo e come tenere insieme questi interessi diversi, anche attraverso tirocini e opportunità legate al mondo del cinema».

Rivolto a ragazzi, e soprattutto ragazze, delle scuole secondarie di primo grado, ISPIRA propone incontri e attività in cui si cerca di mettere in discussione quei meccanismi che spesso orientano interessi, fiducia in sé e immaginazione del proprio futuro.
All’Istituto comprensivo “Settesoldi” di Vecchiano si sono tenute le giornate conclusive del percorso, a cui studenti e studentesse hanno risposto con curiosità e partecipazione. ISPIRA ha loro permesso di guardare alla scienza con occhi diversi, come testimonia Alice, che ha ammesso: “La matematica ha cominciato a piacermi un po’ di più, dopo questo”.

“The most important thing is to be curious, which is the only thing that is needed to do science” (Giuseppina Chiaradonna, teacher at IC “Settesoldi” school in Vecchiano). This message, as simple as it is powerful, encapsulates the spirit of ISPIRA, a project created by graduate students from the Faculty of Sciences of the Scuola Normale Superiore. It stems from the awareness that the gender gap in STEM disciplines begins long before university.
Aimed at students, above all girls, in lower secondary schools, ISPIRA offers meetings and activities designed to challenge the mechanisms that often shape interests, self-confidence, and the imagination of one’s own future.
The concluding days of the programme were held at the “Settesoldi” school in Vecchiano, where students responded with curiosity and enthusiasm. ISPIRA allowed them to see science in a new light, as Alice states: “I have started to like maths a little bit more after this”.
