Or the greatest thing that ever happened to my career and philosophy about creating art. BOTH?
Yeah, I first read this at 12 years old because I was obsessed with “Gone With the Wind.” That alone, speaks volumes I guess…What a little oddball.
But this Tome taught me wrongly or rightly that it took OBSESSION to make something TRULY GREAT.
And that you had to be tough, principled and willing to stand up mightily for what you thought to be right, even in collaboration.
I still feel that way and in a world of sycophants that has cost me.
I now (with maturity) happen to believe that mutual respect and positive collaboration is still absolutely possible within the standards of excellence one sets for ones self. It’s essential.
But I also still believe that the best work ultimately comes from visionaries and Auteurs. And sometimes that means speaking truth to power.
Selznick did and was ALL that and MORE.
From this book I learned that the WIG matters.
That the color of trim on the dress SHOULD match the shoes, that one wrong line reading can undo everything you’re trying to do and that basically ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING matters. All of it.
Now, that will drive many people absolutely crazy. But some will see you and love you for it. (Audiences in particular I find are partial to excellence.)
Twelve years old. I didn’t want to a be a Fireman or even an actor necessarily.
I wanted to be David O. Selznick.
To this day, I carry his determination and grit into everything I tackle. Thank god for the Tucson Public Library.
Now I own my own copy….#director #producer #davidoselznick #gonewiththewind #excellence
Exactly as I first remember it when I got off the plane at LaGuardia in March that same year and rushed to the Imperial Theatre that night to see my first show ON Broadway - DREAMGIRLS.
Such a pilgrimage and such an unforgettable time…with my BFF Tucson Stephen Michael….
Everything was still possible back then…EVERYTHING…#broadway #dreamgirls #newyorkcity #vintage
I’d already directed two musicals…ONCE UPON A MATTRESS, ANYTHING GOES and was just about to Direct BABES IN ARMS…(How cute was that?)
I believed anything was possible and that my future in the theatre was unlimited.
I think I’d have told this kid to rethink things. Big Time. I wish it had all played out differently.
Oh well…I was kinda cute there for a minute. I didn’t even know what to do with that…🥺
came into my life after a performance of MACK & MABEL. Here was this incredibly intelligent kid, talking my ear off about every aspect of what he’d just seen. He was a friend of Marsha Bagwell - a lady I respected a lot and I just thought “Who IS he?”
Come to find out he was already a dancer who’d been studying for a long time and a TALENTED one at that… So I met his wonderful parents and Michael began taking private Tap Class with me…
THEN with the formation of the ARTCO ALL STARS Michael became a founding member of that kids troupe and a MAJOR LEADER within it and his talent in ALL AREAS, Acting, Singing and his ongoing study of DANCE just blossomed. All with Michael exhibiting a work ethic that puts most Adults to Shame.
And all along, in the back of my mind, I knew that there was this role in this show I was developing called “The Music That Makes Me Dance.” If only I could get it done before Michael aged out of it!
And the rest is now history. Michael made his Equity Principal Debut along side some MAJOR Broadway heavy hitters, went toe to toe with them and knocked the whole thing out of the park x 1,000,000. I could not BE more proud of him.
Michael is emblematic of EVERYTHING All Roads Theatre Company’s program CAN BE. And Michael is just the BEGINNING- our program is FULL of insanely talented kids who have NOT yet had their Main Stage moment but are RIGHT on the CUSP!
Kids that will BLOW your MIND. And they will be PERFORMING their Annual Showcase ONE WEEK from RIGHT NOW - Next Sunday at the Barnsdall Theater in Hollywood at 8pm. COME SUPPORT THEM and this program! TICKETS are as low as $25! And this could not BE a better cause!
HELL buy a ticket to SUPPORT wherever you are in this COUNTRY- every $$ helps Michael and his talented friends have a PLACE to HONE and PERFECT their DREAM. Transcendent Performances from the two best Triple Threats I could have EVER dreamt up for myself and ❤️ THANK YOU GUYS. A SPECTACULAR arrangement from my genius parter in crime 🙏 This number literally came out of my pores in a 3 hour pre-production session set on two dancers for hire prior to having Nick and Neil…The bones were BEAUTIFUL and filled with bright promise but Neil and Nick animated every moment of it with light, love and impeccable skills! Thanks also to dance associates and who tended my creation tirelessly while I lifted the rest of that huge boulder of a show up the hill! GRATEFUL to ALL…#broadway #musicaltheatre #choreographer #pride🌈 #gay
