The Calanais Stones.
The first time I went, I was completely mesmerised... the size of the stones, the stillness in the air, the open views all around. I honestly thought I might never get the chance to come back.
But last year we did.
This time the rain and wind were in full force, and it didn’t stop us. We stayed that night within walking distance of the stones, and I couldn’t tell you how many times we went back.
Just one more time.

The very first time I wandered these ruins, I remember stopping beside that tree ( photo 7 if you’re curious) and thinking, this is the perfect picnic spot. In the afternoon, just before sunset, the light there turns really soft and it makes the whole place feel almost unreal.
Of course, Scotland being Scotland, I’ve yet to catch Balvaird on a proper sunny day… but honestly, I don’t mind. Even when it’s grey and a bit wild, I’m happy just wandering around, taking photos, and soaking it all in.

There’s just something about this place… the quiet, the scale of it, the way the city suddenly feels far away. It’s so atmospheric, full of incredible monuments, winding paths, and some of the best views over the skyline.
You walk past angels, towering mausoleums and weathered Victorian tombs, with the Cathedral rising right beside it.
This is the Glasgow Necropolis, a 19th-century garden cemetery built in 1832, when grand memorials were how Glasgow’s merchants, shipbuilders and industrial families left their mark. More than 50,000 people are buried here, and every monument tells a little story about the city’s past.

It has a proper fairytale feel, with the moat completely surrounding it. We visited a few days ago and it was absolutely freezing, but I’ve also been here in summer and it’s genuinely lovely. They even hold a jousting event here, which somehow just feels right for this place.
Back in 1300, Edward I arrived with a huge army and heavy siege engines, expecting a tough fight. The garrison inside was small, but the castle was incredibly well designed, with strong walls, towers covering every angle, and the moat acting as a serious obstacle. The defenders held out long enough to impress even the attacking army, and when the castle finally surrendered, it wasn’t destroyed. The siege was considered so notable that it was written down as a poem, The Siege of Caerlaverock, describing the battle and the knights involved.
Not many places can say their history was literally turned into poetry.

-Pagan symbols are multiple. One can count over 100 green men, a celtic symbol of the divine bond the man has with nature.
Of course, all of these are speculations, but it makes you wonder.

This walk at the Balmoral Estates will take you up to the magnificent Prince Albert's Pyramid, which also offers great views of the countryside.
For the Pyramid Walk, start by parking at Crathie's car park ( there's a fee) and cross the green bridge over the River Dee. Pass through Balmoral Castle's main gates, turning left onto South Deeside Road. The path's heavy use has led to deterioration; wear wellingtons or waterproof boots.
