Now cue dramatic drumroll. I’ve been working on my family trees in recent months and sent off a DNA sample for testing. I received my report last night and the results were a HUGE shock to me. As expected I’m 35% Central Lowland Scot. I live in Edinburgh, as did my recent ancestors so expected that. What I didn’t though was to discover that 21% of my DNA comes from ancestors in the West Highlands and Hebrides - with the biggest concentration hailing from the Isles of Harris & Lewis in the Outer Hebrides.
I haven’t managed to link a single Highlander or Islander to any of my family trees to date, but now know where the infuriating dead-end McDonalds and Morrisons probably came from. I’ve been on a few false (or maybe not) trails with them through the Uists, so it seems I was probably warmer than I thought.
It’s strange to think I developed such a strong bond to the Hebrides during my first visit to the Isle of Mull as a teenager. I’ve visited all of the inhabited islands since then (some numerous times) and have loved getting to know them better over the years. I always feel at home in the Hebrides. Maybe because almost a quarter of my DNA has been telling me, you ARE home you daftie.
I believe your ancestors stay with you and shape who you become - your likes, interests, talents and ties to places and things like having a love of the sea or windblown mountain tops.
The rest of my DNA was a mix of North East Scotland, a few Irish regions and a couple of pockets in England. Devon (normal in Scots along with Cornwall due to Celtic links) and around Newcastle.
Only 1% of my DNA is foreign. Guess where it’s from?
Yip, that’s right - I’m also a wee bit Viking with some ancient Danish DNA thrown into the mix for good measure. 🇩🇰
So in honour of those unknown distant grandparents imprinted in my DNA, here’s a wee Harris and Lewis montage.

This year that’s exactly what I did at the ‘Night Afore’ concert in Edinburgh’s Princes Street Gardens headlined by the phenomenal. With the iconic Edinburgh Castle as a backdrop, Peat & Diesel plus guests and warm up acts and treated the audience to a toe tapping few hours of Scotland inspired bangers. It was awesome.
Peat & Diesel who hail from the Isle of Lewis have long been a favourite of mine - this was the first time I’ve managed to see them live though and they did not disappoint. They were incredible - even better than expected and my expectations were high.
I also LOVED RuMac’s warm up set. It was bonkers, energetic, fun, completely mesmerising and a real toe tapper. It was worth braving the freezing cold Edinburgh night for this act alone, but adding Peat & Diesel to the mix made for a perfect (but Baltic) night out.
Shout out too, to Levi Heron - DJs are not my thing, but he was excellent and did a brilliant job of opening the gig and getting everyone in the mood to ‘give it laldy’.
If you’re not yet acquainted with Peat & Diesel yet check them out - they won’t disappoint. Especially if you’re looking for an authentically Scottish sound to see in the New Year. Think a mix of ceilidh, punk with a wee nod to our Irish neighbours with The Pogues thrown into the mix. Brilliant.
And when it comes - Happy New Year to you all. Lang may yer lum reek. 🔔🎉🥃

This morning was fresh and bright, so after breakfast we drove north to spend the day in and around Braemar in the heart of Royal Deeside. It’s great having one of our favourite Scottish villages within easy reach of our accommodation.
Here’s how we spent the day in Braemar:
⭐️ Morning coffee at the The Fife Arms Braemar. Coffee and an incredible collection of art, including works by Picasso and Freud - what’s not to love?
⭐️ Shopping for Christmas presents at the dog-friendly Braemar Mountain Sports. I’ve finally made a start on my gift buying for this year. Hooray.
⭐️ Potter around the pretty village snapping photos
⭐️ Al fresco lunch (yes really) at The Bothy. They have dog friendly seats indoors, but we decided to sit outside on their covered deck to enjoy the autumnal colours and a river view
⭐️ Walk on the Mar Lodge Estate - 1 3/4 mile Glen Lui Trail. It’s super scenic and takes in mountains, woodland, a river and tumbling falls
⭐️ Coffee and cake from the dog-friendly Pavilion Cafe at the Braemar Highland Games Centre
⭐️ Scenic drive through Glenshee back to Lawton Links. Earlier, en route to Braemar we spotted a hawk, falcon, buzzards, a pair of black grouse and a herd of red deer stags
It’s been a perfect day, rounded off nicely back at Milkwood with a lovely soak in the outdoor tub followed by toasting marshmallows on the fire pit. (Ad)

It’s the kind of place where time stands still and you can truly unwind. It’s perfect.
There’s plenty to see and do on the doorstep too, so stay tuned for more from this lovely corner of Scotland.
