Students have been getting to the heart of mutual aid work! They have been diving into some advanced skill building and challenging conversation. We have been talking about what it means to recognize needs in our communities, and how we can support each other, as we design and build free pantries and libraries for our neighborhoods. Huge thanks to our friends for hosting us.

Maybe you'll find one on a block near you!
It’s been a busy month for our build cohort! Students got to create a sample board of finishes for the larger collective to vote on—so of course this meant we *had* to try shou sugi ban 🔥
The Sawhorse team went up to Smoke Farm to do a quick day trip! We got to deepen in relationship with each other, hang out by the Stillaguamish river and see little salmon fry swimming against the stream, visit past Sawhorse builds, and plan about future projects ✨
More gratitude and inspiration following a recent gathering organized by,, and the garden committee at the New Holly Rockery community garden. The event was full of inspiring, artful, and energizing humans, big and small, as they collaborated with us on the design of their future greenhouse and more.
Jam took a quick little trip out to the peninsula to hang with Cody at and resaw some Doug fir beams! They didn’t get a before picture of the truck bed but if you zoom into the selfies you can see the before and after of the beams 👀
“This strange journey had hidden meaning and purpose for me. Maybe it served to remind me that we must always remember and honor our ancestors, the people and places we came from…The sacrifices of our ancestors and all the others who paved the way for the emergence of the Black Panther Party…We set out to create a more humane world, for not just Black people but for white, brown, yellow, and red people, for the dispossessed and oppressed wherever they reside. We were ready to give our lives, and even to take lives if necessary, to secure a brighter future for all of humanity. We came up short. Yet the Black Panther Party's legacy is eternal.

It will live on, always, in the hearts and minds of those who stand for the truth, of those who stand for justice and are willing to do whatever is needed to create the world we all deserve to live in: a world free of poverty, hunger, greed, fear, and hate—a world full of love and abundance.

I have no regrets about my ten years as a soldier in the Black Panther Party. In the end, it is the memories that make life worth living, particularly the good memories…My memories of the Black Panther Party are of men and women rising in unison to carry that flame, taking up a position of defiance, of sacrifice, and of undying love, infused with passion and determination to write a new, bold future for Black America. That eternal beacon will shine on, lighting the way for future generations and illuminating the past, helping us remember a time when the possibilities for humanity were endless.”

The gathering place at Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center is in the works! Check out the amazing students in action, getting a chance to try out some tools that are new to them (and us) and becoming proficient with familiar ones. Thank you for allowing us to reuse these beautiful local western red cedar beams that have been part of the Center for decades—it is a real honor and privilege ⭐️

“Build a better world,” we like to say. But everyone who builds knows that it’s about 100 (or is it 1,000?) times easier to destroy something than it is to build it. The work of years and decades can be undone in a day. That’s in part because building takes persistence, effort, suffering, collaboration, creativity… You will always encounter the unknown when you build, no matter how perfect the plans, or how well you did the last one. Every little feature takes time and care.

Indeed, this is one of the reasons we build, continuously, and invite youth into this process of building. Because in building we do something fundamental: we practice caring.

Building helps us see, feel, and sense the effort it takes to create, to maintain.

It reminds us that we all have a role to play, that nobody at the end of the day will do it for us, but that we can, in fact, do it together.

So, in the light of ongoing oppression, we’re going to stay at work in the community, bringing youth to the forefront of building new worlds around them. “Build a better world,” we like to say. Much 💛
A youth-designed and built Shade Shelter stands tall at the New Holly Rockery Garden. Even a small building can bring a sense of place to the people who live there- one of the main design intentions of the students working under the tutelage of, and built with the mentorship from professional craftspeople from. In this case, form is part of the function: A playful invitation to rest in the middle of gardening, to chat with your friends or family, to gulp water after playing basketball just down the street 💛 show your love for our students’ work in the comments!
