Some snaps of one of our ‘Cache’ starmap boxes in Tasmanian Blackwood, recently completed for a brilliant repeat client. They commissioned a non-matching pair to mark the birth of their daughters, with the boxes to be gifted on their 21st birthdays.

Each box features a concealed compartment underneath, held in place by magnets, acting as a time capsule. Tucked away for now. Full of the small, important things to be opened and revealed years down the track.

The lid maps the sky from the exact time and place they were born, set in a solid brass inlay. A one-off sky, locked to a moment. We’ve made these for weddings, births, and sometimes for the tougher life moments too. Different reasons, but the same instinct. Holding onto a moment that matters.

I’ve had a blast testing out the BenchPilot for Origin over the past few weeks. Check out my review in the upcoming edition of and hear my thoughts on the pro’s and con’s of this unique automated upgrade for the Shaper ecosystem.

Big thanks to for the loan of the BenchPilot 👍🏻
This week has been a tough one for the whole country.

I’m still trying to process the loss of a former teammate in such horrific circumstances. If anyone has the means to donate to Adam’s family to help them through the trauma they are experiencing I’d really appreciate it. I’ll post the link in the comments below.

I hope Australia heals from this and communities on all sides are given time and space to grieve and recover without being ostracised or isolated.

F*ck extremism of all kinds.

RIP Adam ♥️
Well it’s an understatement to say it’s been quiet on here for a whole host of personal reasons. I’m currently neck deep in submissions for my Masters of Secondary teaching, raising two amazing young kids and trying to churn out some commissions when time allows.

Anyway, tonight was a good night. An evening stroll with my boy up to our dam and we spotted our first koala since moving here right by my workshop. A magical moment to share with the young fella and one I’ll remember forever. Love ya Straya 🐨 🇦🇺 🍻
Time for the Blackbird to take its final flight back to the client after some intensive repairs following some devastating damage it received in transit from 🇺🇸 > 🇦🇺. It was a highly challenging but very satisfactory process putting this one back together.

People often ask if I have a preference for hand tools or machinery, my response is that it is whatever method is appropriate and does the best job. In this case it was 99.9% hand tools. A combination of planes, spokeshaves and card scrapers was used in this job. Nice to step away from the machines and test my hand skills again.
Blackbird 🐦‍⬛ is finally back in one piece again! This was a bit of a head scratcher to work out the jig required to plane the damaged section of wing but I got there in the end. I opted to add dowels back into the main body of the jet to assist with carrying the weight of the wings but they are also a huge help with glue up alignment.

It is currently glued up and getting its second coat of India ink dye stain. Stay tuned for the results!
A lovely (unplanned) collaboration between and the always heavy-handed FedEx has ended up in my workshop for repairs.

Time to give this CNC-carved, walnut Blackbird some assessment and work out the best way to get it back in one piece.

Unfortunately the wing has rattled around the packing crate and sustained some damage so it isn’t just as straightforward as glueing it back on.
Annnnd that’s a wrap on Craft Lab 25, thanks to all the amazing visitors, chats and support of other makers & artisans over the past two weekends. It’s been a blast. 💥

My nook for Ballarat’s Craft Lab 25 Exhibition. Pretty amazing to think 135 years ago that miners and merchants were haggling about the price of their gold finds in this very spot. The history and heritage of this place warms the soul.

Come along to the Mining Exchange 10am-5pm today and tomorrow to check out some of the best contemporary art from Regional Victoria.

Big thanks again to and for putting on such an incredible event. Bloody legends 👊🏻
We were invited onto the to discuss Craft Lab 25 with the lovely last week. This weekend you have another chance to hope on the V line and get yourself up to Ballarat’s Mining Exchange to meet an impressive array of multi disciplinary makers and artists from across Ballarat and Regional Victoria.
