Inside the Sirius building. During a housing crisis, it's unfathomable to think that just a few years ago, the NSW government sold social housing cheaply to developers. Sirius was sold for $155 million (less than $2 million per apartment), and the developers recently sold just one of those apartments for $55 million. Go Sydney!

Happy Birthday to our oldest friend and neighbour - the Sydney Harbour Bridge turns 90 today!

The bridge has seen Sirius grow from an empty block to a brutalist icon, housing the working class of Sydney... It has also stood over our city, watching on as it changed over time.

It’s a shame that Sirius can’t be celebrated and recognised the same way that the bridge is today. Instead, construction has begun to turn the once social housing for low-income people into investments for the uber-wealthy.

Perhaps, in 90 years things will be different again.

Myra Demetriou passed away on 23 October 2021 at the age of 94.

Myra reminded us that being good and decent and community-minded makes a wonderful and meaningful life – too often we forget these simple but necessary building blocks of society that hold and bind us together.

Myra also reminded us that great people live in all our communities. She reached across divides with her wit and warm smile, disarming as she went. This also gave her the strength to stare down a limited and narrow government consumed by money and little else. Without Myra SaveOurSirius would not have been as potent and as successful. She was the face of our campaign and the heart of Sirius.

Myra was a great Sydneysider, a much-loved member of her many communities and a fearless soul. We all loved Myra, and Myra loved us all. Vale Myra – we will certainly miss you.

We invite you to add your comments and memories of Myra to the Save Our Sirius Website - link in bio.

Tune in to ABC this Sunday to hear Myra’s interview with Simon Marine.

REGRAM: Never forget when the NSW government kicked residents doing it tough out of the Sirius social housing complex (including a 93 year old woman) so they could give it to developers.
Today is the 40th anniversary of the offical public opening of Sirius. A few years ago, we make this lamington cake to mark the occasion.
'Sirius' has won the 2020 Adrian Ashton Prize for Architectural Culture and Literature!

Thankyou to for the award, and for recognizing this book and our campaign as significant.

Sirius tells the extraordinary story of survival against the odds for our brutalist beauty in The Rocks, a building that has become an icon, representing the power of community. The story of Sirius is told through many voices throughout the book, and you can see the huge amount of people who have contributed to both the text and campaign on the acknowledgements page.

Thankyou to all our supporters, we wouldn't have reached this point without you.

Here is what Clover Moore says about Sirius:

“If you believe Sydney should be more than just an enclave for the rich, then this is a fight you should be part of. Whether you love the look of Sirius or not, the issues in play here are far deeper than aesthetics.

“At the heart of it, the Berejiklian State Government don’t believe low income people should be living in the city (and certainly not with harbour views) and they’re pushing these them out to the city fringe, far from their communities, transport networks, employment and other support services.

“But Sirius housed the tight knit community that fought to protect The Rocks in the ‘70s, local residents whose roots go back to the early colony. And this building was purpose-built to house them after those very important fights.

“So a lot of people ask, what can I do about it?

“Well this beautiful book is a good start. I joined Councillors Jess Scully and Philip Thalis last night to launch it with the authors John Dunn, Ben Peake and Amiera Piscopo, who have worked tirelessly to save the building. It’s not an expensive purchase, at $25, and it will help support this urgent campaign.”
