I wasn’t in the crowd this time, but I was not somewhere else either.
I waited all week from another time zone, following the buses arriving from across Ontario, Telegram groups opening homes, strangers handing out food, Canadian officials standing beside Iranians. I watched it form, hour by hour, Wafaa and I kept talking about it as it unfolded.
On a day the world calls Valentine’s Day, families inside Iran were placing flowers where their children were shot. And in Toronto, people gathered. 🫀
Yesterday reminded me that exile does not erase belonging. It stretches it. 🏹

Grateful to,, and for the invitation to ArtWeek at such a meaningful time.
Structural critique and media analysis matter. But timing matters too. When people are being killed, detained, and cut off from communication, shifting the focus toward abstraction, narrative complexity, or media manipulation risks displacing material violence with analysis.
This is not a branding problem.
This is not a messaging failure.
What is not neutral is theorizing fragmentation while bodies are still being counted. Complexity should never come at the cost of urgency or dignity. I’m listening and observing, but for now, my responsibility is clear, to stand with the people.
Sara.
