I am thinking about putting together a simple book (a zine? A limited edition artist’s book? A workbook for teaching?) that could serve as a guide to the polygons that are the building blocks of so many traditional quilt patterns. I have been reading up on Froebel and learning about how he integrated geometry into early childhood education through play, and I wonder if others might find his analogue ways as refreshing as I do. Pattern play, thanks in large part to Froebel, was all the rage in the second half of the 19th century and I wonder if this might have even influenced quilters? Does anyone know of scholarship on this subject? Are any of you early childhood educators who incorporate Froebel into your teaching? Quilters, teachers, and artists: would you be interested in a book that digs into the geometry of simple polygons including how to make templates and ideas for pattern play? I’m brainstorming and would love to hear other people’s thoughts, references, and experiences. Thanks!❤️🔺🔶🟩
I spend a lot of time staring at the great big maples and pines in my backyard. They have changed a lot in the last few weeks. Their flowers are falling and the warblers are returning. This tree quilt got me through the winter, now it’s time to move on. Trees - vintage prints and men’s shirts, 100% cotton. 85” x 82”
One of my favorite things about traveling in Japan with last May was finding connections between places and objects that superficially seem quite different. One day we were looking at an installation of silver balls by Yayoi Kusama surrounded by Tokyo high rises, a week later we were deep in a bamboo forest in Chiba where spherical baskets were woven into the trees. From lily pads to cabbages, stepping stones to serving dishes, round objects and motifs emerged everywhere! We will be returning to Japan in November with a whole new itinerary packed with opportunities to make new design discoveries. Registration info and the whole itinerary are linked in my bio (Note:Quilters, you will be especially interested in all the quilt focused programming - check it out!). Questions? DM me!

Prior to my trip to Kyoto last spring, I knew very little about the artist Kawai Kanjiro. Since visiting his home museum (not once but twice!), he has become one of my favorite artists! What I love about his work, is how he managed to bring together his practice, his worldview, and his community into one peaceful whole. When I feel overwhelmed, I pull out this little book as a reminder “we do not work alone”. If you have dreamed of travel in Japan, consider joining me next November on a two week textile and design tour with and. There is so much to discover! Link for more information is in my bio ❤️ (ps kawai’s work will be exhibited in New York this spring. If you’re in the city, check it out!)
Not a day goes by that I don’t think about everything I learned when traveling in Japan last May with the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts,Takako Wilden, and a wonderful group of curious women. Since then, life has taken many twists and turns, but one thing I observed in Japan is that we should embrace and encourage the twisted just as much as the straight.

I am thrilled to announce that Takako, Emily, and I will be returning to Japan in November for a whole new adventure and we invite you to join us! This trip will take us from Tokushima on Shikoku to Northern Niigata. We will be meeting many contemporary Japanese quilters and experiencing traditional Japanese textile arts, while also enjoying historic sites, gardens, and extraordinary food. I can’t wait! A link to the whole itinerary is in my bio and there will be an info session hosted by the Museum on February 25 (DM me for details).

BTW I am acutely aware that taking a trip like this is a big deal, even a bucket list item for many of us, so if you have questions, don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m happy to talk it over with you😊
I can’t explain why this is what I have been working on over the past few months but somehow it has helped me with all the anger and the grief… swipe through to see strange but touching still life paintings hanging at our local Korean lunch place and a sweet note from my grandma to my mom telling her to sew a dress for me or my sister from the accompanying fabric. Mom never sewed the dresses. Now the fabric is part of this quilt. Sending love to all who are struggling. I’m right there with you ❤️
The roots of modern foundation piecing go back to the 18th century, when Victorian crazy quilts were all the rage. Muslin, newspaper, or old letters were used to stabilize narrow scraps, or perfect tricky angles without so much math. By drawing a pattern on paper and sewing pieces together along printed lines, so much of the guesswork of angles and sizing is gone!

On January 16th, quilting artist Sarah Nishiura will be joining TATTER's Hand Sewn Quilting Series to teach the fundamentals of foundation piecing. This class is perfect for beginners daunted by the precision of quilting, or expert quilters looking to try a new approach. With endless opportunity for experimentation, foundation piecing is an excellent addition to any quilter's repertoire.
