It’s easy to underestimate the number of decisions and level of detail that goes into designing and furnishing a room.

Here, there were hundreds (if not thousands) of elements to consider, especially as it needed to work multi-functionally, as both a relaxing library reception room and home workspace.

Decisions when designing range from the selection of material, stain and format of flooring to the style, size and framing of the artwork - and EVERYTHING in between.

Scale should always central to decision-making.
Here, we were careful to ensure the chimney breast - built out, to house the stone fireplace - and joinery flanking it, were perfect proportioned. The right size and style of furniture was also imperative and the fabrics and finishes also carefully considered to really make it sing.

We wanted to bring the serenity, ambience and elegance of a luxury spa to our clients’ home.

The devil is in the detail when achieving this look and feel, from the selection of tile, for comfort underfoot, to the layered lighting and scenting.

The bespoke double vanity with matching mirror, that we designed, is substantial in both scale and storage, with large under-mount sinks and hidden compartments for toothbrush charging.

Storage is key in a bathroom (everywhere, really) but this should never be fully to the detriment of a room’s aesthetics. I think we managed to strike the perfect balance here, with the creamy polished stone top, natural oak finish and gorgeous triptych of wall lights for even, flattering illumination.

Moody and masculine, with a sumptuous palette of deep navy, cognac and caramel and rich mix of materials and finishes, we are delighted with this study at our Radlett project.

The bespoke joinery was designed to meet our client’s requirements, which included sufficient storage, an eye-catching Zoom background and even a fully integrated chocolate fridge for emergency provisions!

We really enjoy combining styles - in this case, contemporary with heritage - as it adds so much depth and interest to a scheme. Even the shelf styling showcases a mix of old and new, simple and decorative, with an abundance of books. It’s this interplay of elements that really does create the perfect outcome.

How do you add personality to your home?

It’s easy when you know how - no one wants ‘bland, unremarkable and forgettable’. Here are some top tips to ensure you get that WOW…

1. Go with your gut. If you love it, go for it. Stop asking for a million opinions - ‘too many cooks’. That being said, if you’d like my professional opinion, I’d be very happy to help make your home amazing so get in touch!

2. Know when to splurge and when to save. It is definitely worth investing in certain statement pieces and you can always cost engineer in other areas.

3. Don’t design for your future house sale. Yes, it makes sense if you’re decorating to market your home, but otherwise forget what ‘Joe Public’ wants to see or if it’s ’on trend’. It’s your home - ENJOY it!.

4. Mix things up. Combine old with new, vintage with contemporary, masculine with feminine, hard finishes with soft elements and consider both positive and negative space. Variety is the spice of life.

5. Embrace art and accessorize. Anything that ‘speaks’ to you ideally! We also source art and commission pieces for clients and work with some amazing specialist art consultants and galleries too. Art adds so much interest and personality to to a space - it’s so important!

Finally, thanks to our lovely clients for being brave with their hallway and stair carpet and letting us photograph the fabulous outcome!

Pattern + texture. I’m always on the lookout.

If you want to avoid your space being flat, ensure you later at least one, if not both. If you’re scared of pattern,
How do we know a design scheme will work and share the vision with our clients?

In addition to years of training and experience, experimentation and exploration over time, the development of concept and sample boards and natural ‘sense’, we produce both concept and scale drawings so our clients get a good idea of what to expect. I’ve shared a few examples in this Reel but we have endless drawings and renders!

We also create design intent drawings for bespoke joinery and furniture, which we design exclusively in-house, as well as working on mechanical and electrical plans, interior architectural details and specification documents for site contractors.

If you’re going at it alone;

#1: You should really just call us instead. We can help make your home amazing!
#2: Consider scale and proportions, even down to the height of window treatments or the size of cushions on a sofa
#3: Layer, layer, layer. Fabrics, finishes, lighting…
#4: Consider practical elements such as shelf heights or curtain stack-back placement next to joinery
#5: Always think ‘where can I put my drink down’ when installing any seating. Side tables, laptop tables coffee tables, little cocktail tables - they are all your friend
Wish you were brave enough to go for colour on your walls but too scared to actually commit?

You’re not alone. I hear this all the time.

But if this is something you keep coming back to, here’s how you can make it happen successfully…

1. Trial large samples on sheets of lining paper, after applying 2-3 coats to really understand the depth of colour. Moving these from wall to wall and exploring in different light, at different times of day will give you insight into how each shade behaves before committing.

A top tip is to avoid putting different shades next to each other as one can influence and impact another.

2. Remember that colour doesn’t have to be bright or garish. There are countless sophisticated shades to explore, some of which I will share in the future.

As we did here, choose more muted, greyed-out hues if you want to keep things pared back and understated.

3. Mid-tones (as shown above) are your friend. Not too light, not too dark, just right: Whatever the colour, a mid helps lighter elements pop within your scheme and still has sufficient contrast with darker accents so you can really explore and exploit tonality.

4. If you’re tempted to embrace colour, lean into it all the way. Go for all walls! Incorporate panelling and woodwork - also known as ‘colour washing’ - for a more modern take. And, if you can, paint out the radiators too.

Extending your colour onto the cornice (or even the ceiling) can create a seamless look.

5. If you insist on a colour ‘feature wall’ go monochromatic and just adjust the depth of colour on the other walls. For example, if you have one wall painted in a strong teal then extend this idea with softer aquamarine or seafoam elsewhere rather than stark white. Consider it ‘variations on a theme’.

And don’t EVER finish a darker colour on an open corner. That’s a non-negotiable.

Have fun! It’s only paint after all. Worst case scenario, it’s a relatively low cost fix 🙌🏼

September. The start of a new season!

Here’s a little #focus23 round up (really just a mash-up of my stories set to music by Instagram) to live on the grid. As always, it was buzzy, fun, inspiring and uplifting! Thanks

We have lots of juicy projects starting and currently underway so my aim is to share more behind-the-scenes content in the coming months. And if you want to discuss your project, please do get in touch as we’re always here to help! Sarah x
High contrast is always a win!

Here, we kept the walls clean and contemporary, colour-washing onto the woodwork and ceiling for a streamlined look. We took the party to the floor (see previous post for more inspo).

I know everyone says the guest loo should be memorable and where you express your craziest self, but I say just keep it chic.

How do you decorate yours?
