Two different Didymium species I found on leaves of the local understorey tree known as “dogwood”, Pomaderris apetala.
The leaves are covered in stellate hairs, and in the second photo you can see the dark plasmodial tracks left by the active plasmodium as it fed on the leaf.

Collembola (springtails) love slime moulds. These Acanthanura don’t eat anything else.

These slime moulds that I found in the forest during the past week show their diversity of form and colour.
The first is Physarum viride, a common species in the forest here, that I found on a small stick on the ground. The second photo of the same species is surrounded by really tiny structures, which could be fungi or slime moulds.
The third slime mould is Trichia erecta that I found on the underside of a very large fallen blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon) log. Th last photo is a Comatricha that I found half way up a dead standing tree with very dry flaky bark. The almost black fruiting bodies have sclerotised, which suggests the substrate dried out before they fully matured.

Cribraria cancellata found on very well-decayed wood several days ago.
It’s one of my favourite slime moulds!
.
#myxomycetes #slimemold #decay
This is a slime mould sclerotium. It formed yesterday when the veins of the plasmodium I have been watching contracted and dried because we haven’t had rain for a few days.
Sclerotia are rarely seen because plasmodia they form from usually occur within woody substrates and rarely on the surface.
The veins of sclerotium in the photo are surrounded by a “shadow” indicating where the plasmodium had been active when the tree was still wet. The mottled substrate to the right of the sclerotium is where the plasmodium had eaten the white “paint splash” fungus.
