“Design is about exchange and exploration of culture and know-how, which results in interesting concepts. The experience has been great - ideas flourish, conversations lead to surprising stories, and most importantly we grow together. We want to build pieces that aren't categorized, but make living comfortable for people in the given context.” Read more about SĀR Studio’s founder and her idea behind the brand; published in featuring 99 Young Designers in Asia, 2019.
Indians find it perfectly natural and comfortable to sit on chattais on the floor in the Sukhasana position (cross-legged), a concept which is inherently rooted in their culture. This was the inspiration for the Italian Designer for designing the Paffe sofa. He designed the Paffe with its signature removable quilts or tappetini, which serve as soft armrests but can be removed and laid out on the floor as additional seats; a playful appearance that resonates with Giorgio’s own exploratory nature. The Paffe is a modern sofa system that beautifully conjugates intrinsic habits and culture with contemporary living and functionality.

“Hi I’m Lajja Shah. I’m a graphic designer and an art writer. I stay at Matunga. It’s been a year since we moved here and what I have really missed and long for is to stand in the balcony watching the moon. So my idea of a chair would be something that would recline comfortably and at an angle where I can just gaze up into the sky. If this chair could have some adjustment where you know I can alter the height or the reclining angle of the chair allows me to be one with nature. I imagine it to be like a chair which kind of a curved, you know sort of like a half mooned shape. I was kind of thinking about how you know the chair also kind of altering its form to kind of reflect the phases of the moon that I was really like, yeah, that’s my dream.”

“Hi, I am Dharvi Desai, I’m 45 years old. I’m a home baker and a home chef. Yes I would definitely want some comfort in my work place that is my own kitchen. I actually apparently just happened to take a trial of Sonet which has ventilated air conditioned chairs (laughs) so I just got an idea from there because it’s very hot here, so some machinery attached giving me a little cool air. I was looking at.. design for me, a little bit higher that... equal height for my working platform, probably have a back massager, straight back, not.. I don’t need like a curved back or anything. Probably with some rollers so that I can move it easily from one place to another place. Would love to have nice bright vibrant colour. Whenever I see a massaging chair at somebody’s place I just feel that I wish this chair had an AC attached to it from the back. So yeah, I think that would be an ideal chair for my purpose”

“My name is Jikky Renji Mathews and I’m best defined as a homemaker. So the chair that I would like to have is one that will keep my back upright, give some rest to my feet. If, additionally, if it can swing a bit, a chair with a wheel. Maybe to relax a bit... in the balcony.. Or maybe when I’m reading a book. Material in the sense for.. I would like a wood thing, cause metal can rust. And light-weighted, like, it should not be that heavy that I cannot move it around. It should be padded well, it should not be that it is hard on the back and... be really nice cushioned. Hand rest and even head rest if possible. Swing kind of a chair with straight backrest possibly if it could be flexible. For a long time I wouldn’t want to sit very straight upright but if we can you know move the back a bit up and down, that would be wonderful”

“Okay so my name is Sujata Dharmadhikari. And I’m 62 years old. So (laughs) I live with my husband here who is also... we are both senior citizens. I would like to have a particular helper with me in the form of a chair, okay. I would like a chair which would help me do things you know. For example, I am fond of reading books. So I would like books in front. And to be able to stretch legs in front, of course. So I would like my chair to have all options and I would like to put my feet up and read a bit. On the side I feel like having a bit of wine or juice. Secondly, what I want is that it should do some chores, household chores. If we can put a vacuum cleaner or something below. But I want to go down into the garden, to water it. I have to do my own things over here, you can’t find any help here, so.. I want my house to be clean, I want my garden to be clean, I want my plants to be watered, but then I don’t have time to do all this also together. I want to read also, but the house should be organised too. How to do all this together? So something like this, I don’t mind also na...”

“Hey, I’m Shambhavi Kothari from Bangalore. So, I think a chair for me is something that when I sit on it, it wraps me around like a warm hug after all the running around work of the house, makes you feel like letting go. Maybe it could also take care of the pain, relax your feet and massage the back at the same time. I think for me function and aesthetic both are important. Something like an in-built massager which is not seen, like not those bulky ones. If there are some points which give you acupuncture or... design point of view would be you know you just sink into it but not completely that you can’t get up... like a lounge chair maybe for the bedroom or something”
