Feel like the opposition blockers are constantly reading where you will set? 😬

One way that Miguel combats this is by taking the ball higher when he sets! 🙌

By doing so the middle has to look up at the ball which makes moving to the pins more difficult. 👀

When I was in my first year of university—17 years old, full of ambition and insecurity—I was fortunate to be surrounded by incredible mentors.

Older teammates helped me navigate the challenges of leaving home, adjusting to university life, and finding my footing as both an athlete and a person. One of those men was Konrad Korkowski.

Konrad was one of the most charismatic and genuinely connected people I had ever met. You could feel the size of his heart within minutes of talking to him. Even now, just thinking about him lifts my mood and brings a smile to my face.

Over the Christmas holidays, Konrad and his family received devastating news. His wife, Tricia—the mother of their 15 month old Jameson—was diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Tricia, who also competed at the University of Manitoba alongside us, is an exceptional athlete and would later go on to represent Canada with the women’s national team.

This diagnosis comes with an unimaginable emotional burden, as well as a significant financial one. The family will be pursuing treatment in the United States, which comes at a substantial cost.

To support Tricia and Konrad, I will be running a setter clinic on January 10th, with 100% of the proceeds going directly to their family.

This clinic will be a unique format:

There will be no cap on registration
Coaches are welcome to attend - you will see the ticket for coaches.

The goal is participation, community, and support.

My hope is to demonstrate what the volleyball community—especially here in Calgary—stands for: showing up for one another when it matters most.

If you are interested - comment “clinic” and i will send you more information.
If you’re unable to attend the clinic, or if you are not a setter or volleyball player, donations are also welcome and will go directly to their family.

You can find more information and their direct GoFundMe at the link on Konrad’s profile. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Thank you for reading, sharing, and supporting.

This game was WILD.

Rewatching it now. And I cannot help but notice how impressive A&Ms offence is.

Very very very well done 👏
ALL IN 💥💥💥
Not every point,
Not every practice,
Not every day.

👉 But this is a GAME that we all love. That makes our heart beat faster. That means something to us.

SO..

🙌 Playing it SHOULD BE FUN.

I was hesitant to say “should” because I am not here to tell you how something is supposed to feel, and I want to be clear that I’m not, I’m here to remind you of something that you already know. You started playing this game for a reason. With a passion. Maybe that isn’t there anymore.

Maybe you feel….
Frustrated,
Angry,
Anxious,
Overwhelmed,
Alone,
Bored,
Stuck in your head,
All of it.

🙏 But it doesn’t have to be that way. We can begin to understand the signals that are being sent to us from our Nervous System. We can take back control of the game we love.

🤔 It doesn’t mean you are to ‘blame’ if you are not having fun. That also doesn’t mean the sport is to ‘blame’ if it isn’t fun anymore. It means that we want to take a beat to listen to those signals. What is causing them. Why are they being caused.

✅ Instead, let’s make it fun again.

It is fun to…
Challenge yourself,
Connect with your team,
Learn something new,
Make a crazy play,
Get tired during a long rally,
Work hard,
Trust yourself,
PLAY

Lets…
Find your flow 💫
Even though it feels like it does.

Whether I knew it or not, I was caught in this trap more than I would like to openly admit.

I pushed harder not so I could enjoy this incredible game we love, but so that I would be accepted by those around me. So that I would feel GOOD.

It was a big reason I got obsessed with sports in the first place. But I have a secret. Something I only realized late in my career and that I see every single day now >>> it doesn’t have to be like that.

In laymen’s terms. Your body is designed to make this happen.

Win = feel good. Literally. Your body is flooded with all sorts of hormones letting you know how awesome that was. Do more of that.

Lose/Play bad/Get subbed out = feel terrible. Same deal. Your body takes over and sends gross feeling hormones everyone. Trying to get your attention and let you know that WE DON’T WANT THAT TO HAPPEN. BAD, BAD, BAD.

Happens enough times,
We start to believe it.
We might even believe that is who we are.

You will play great.
You will win.
You will feel on top of the world.
You will play bad.
You will lose.
You will feel lost.
In the middle of it, at the end of it, you are going to understand yourself a lot better than you did at the start.

Keep moving.
That’s the game.

You got this.

In honour of Mental Health Day being yesterday…

🙃 This was NOT something that came naturally to me.

I always identified as a volleyball player first. My core value was linked into my performance and my relationship with volleyball.

Easy to see how that can be a slippery slope. A few poor performances, difficult coaches, or a sour culture quickly turns your entire world upside down. Or, in my case alongside all of those things, an injury.

These things happen;
▪️Getting subbed out
▪️Not making the club team you want to
▪️Being on the bench
▪️Missing a serve on game point

👉 But that is not WHO YOU ARE

That is an experience you are having. Experiences pass. Experiences are what you learn from.

💫 That experience doesn’t have to be your relationship with the sport. The sport can become an opportunity for you to express who you are. A chance to connect with people that are close to you. A way to accomplish big goals that you have set.

You are BECOMING more of the person that you are through volleyball, not because of volleyball.

It is a beautiful game with a beautiful community, but don’t forget…

YOU ARE MORE THAN A VOLLEYBALL PLAYER
