While milk (breastmilk or formula) remains the primary source of nutrition in that first year, their tiny tummies fill up so fast once they start solids. The secret isnāt feeding them more volumeāitās making every single bite nutritionally dense. š”
Here are some of my favorite nutrient-packed, high-calorie whole foods to add to your babyās plate:
š¹ Dairy: Full-fat Greek yogurt, cheese, or ghee
š¹ Proteins: Eggs & thoroughly cooked fish
š¹ Healthy Fats: Nut butters & ground seeds (flax, chia, hemp)
š¹ Natural Sweetness: Date paste or pureed dates
Save this post for your next grocery run, and drop your babyās favorite food in the comments below! šš¶
When your baby hits that 6-month milestone, itās incredibly exciting to start solids! But there is absolutely no need to rush. A responsive, low-pressure start is the key to building positive associations with food.
Here is a simple, stress-free routine to follow as you begin:
⨠6 Months: 1 meal a day (Focusing on a single, positive sensory experience)
⨠7 Months: 2 meals a day (Gradually expanding their palate and building routine)
Why do we need to take it slow?
šæ A Gentle Transition for Tiny Tummies: At 6 months, a babyās digestive system and enzymes are still maturing. Starting with just one meal gives their gut the time it needs to adapt gently, preventing discomfort, heaviness, or fussiness.
š§ Itās a Brand-New Experience: For a baby who has only known milk, jumping into multiple meals is a massive leap. One meal a day allows them to explore textures, tastes, and the mechanics of eating without feeling overwhelmed.
š„ Milk is Still the Main Event: In these early weeks, breast milk (or formula) remains the primary source of calories and critical nutrition. Introducing too many solid meals too quickly can accidentally displace those essential milk feeds.
šÆ Learning Before Hunger: At this age, babies donāt yet connect solid food with fulfilling hungerātheir cues are still tied to milk. Solids are purely about practice, sensory exposure, and learning. One meal a day keeps the process fun, pressure-free, and full of curiosity!
Let them set the pace, enjoy the messy moments, and trust the journey. š¤
