Drawing on more than twenty years of teaching and research, and on the occasion of her book Play the System: Parametric Approaches in Graphic Design, published by Slanted Publishers, Heike Grebin reflects on design as a rule-based yet open process shaped by variation and external influences — a process that creates room for experimentation and surprise.
She demonstrates how the interplay of structure and variation has shaped design for centuries — from medieval scriptoria to today’s dynamic systems — and how it continues to inspire student work.
For this evening, Heike has invited Luna Maurer, who has significantly influenced her teaching concepts. Luna will discuss the evolution of her interests — from Conditional Design to Designing Friction, to her current exploration, Dance Out of Pattern.
Katharina Wanke, who provided editorial support for the project, will share insights into the book and the process behind it — including the connections between the publication and web version of the Play the System archive. She will also moderate the evening.

The Elephant in the Waiting Room is a collection of 10 science fiction stories, curated by Baltan Laboratories, which do not address the theme of imminent disaster, but rather the ways in which we anticipate or overcome it.
For this reason, the cover design by Carosello Lab on the outside of the book, leaves a list of possible catastrophes that orbit around it in an endless doomscroll; yet they remain on the surface, without determining the stories contained within. This almost counters a widespread trend in science fiction that turns the “pornography of catastrophe” and its spectacle into entertainment. Our authors are not interested in the gruesome details of events themselves, but in the myriad ways we influence them and are, in turn, influenced by them.
The Elephant in the Waiting Room brings together artists, writers, and creatives from different disciplines and nationalities, posing them a challenge: to write about the technological revolution of the near future—whether for better or worse, tomorrow or a hundred years from now. We asked the authors to reflect on the traits that define our current technological era and, instead of imagining its climax, to sketch its prologues and epilogues.
This collection proposes an alternative imaginary of revolution: One that is not morbidly fixated on death and destruction—so often presented as the side effects of change—but instead focuses on the people, places, and societies that lead to those supposed “endings” or continue beyond them.
We live in the waiting room—awaiting World War III, the consequences of climate change, technological collapse, and the depletion of natural resources. What would our existence be like if it were not defined by this waiting?

Launch of PACES THE CAGE

S*an D. Henry-Smith’s second full-length book of poems, PACES THE CAGE, lifts off from their previous book, Wild Peach (2020), by expanding an already-queered language to near breaking point. Through the complexities of Henry-Smith’s personal experiences and the use of a poetically fragmented voice, the literal and metaphorical are here remixed in real time. Henry-Smith’s occasional inclusion of ambient sounds
and a musical language and tone used throughout the book helps to build a rich auditory landscape that enhances the immersive quality of the poems, creating a deep and evocative collection by this adventurous and endlessly exciting artist. As if it were an improvised performance itself, PACES THE CAGE actively tunes personal and historical narratives of oppression and adversity with the act of speaking, and what it means to be truly heard by a community of one’s fellow creators and collaborators.

We warmly welcome you to the launch of “A Rite for Ruins” – a special artist’s publication accompanying the musical/sculptural performance by Publik Universal Frxnd, composed in collaboration with Janne Kosmos and Silva Westera. The performance combines organ, cello, voice, and sculpture, reflecting on how we experience mourning and memory in turbulent times. The work is dedicated to the memory of Simone Victoria Moss also known as Babes Trust and Babes Labeija (1980 – 2023).
The publication brings together an atmospheric series of images documenting performances that took place in two Frisian churches, alongside archival photographs of the locations and the organs featured in the work. The source images are drawn from various local church archives in the Netherlands and elsewhere and served as inspiration in the development of the project. The publication features text drawn from the original performance script by Public Universal Frxnd, capturing the essence of the work as it moves from live performance into print. It also includes a QR code linking to full video documentation of the performance.
During the launch event, Public Universal Frxnd, Janne Kosmos and Silva Westera will present a short extract from the original work.

TALKER is an interview zine about performance. Each issue publishes a long-form interview with an artist who works in an innovative way with live practice. The interviews discuss process, formative experiences and performance cultures generally.
Issue #16 is a conversation with Martín La Roche. Born in Santiago, Chile, and living now in Amsterdam, his works commonly find starting points in existing collections of objects or memories and archives as modes of storytelling. These often meet their audiences as installations or publications, but this issue of TALKER explores the role performance plays in activating the many facets of his practice. In particular, TALKER examines formative experiences in Chile and as a resident at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht, his collaboration informed by psychotherapeutic practices, Sandplay with Mirthe Berentsen, and the ongoing Musée Légitime, a museum inside a hat.
With Dongyoung Lee and Valeria Marchesini, he runs the research platform Good Neighbour and is a member of the collective To See the Inability to See with Arefeh Riahi and Maartje Fliervoet.
Launch of TERRA INFECTA

Based on a decade of research and fieldwork, Terra Infecta is an attempt at writing a political history of the landscape through the lens of sanitation, illness and hygiene. The book takes Italy as a case study, and reveals neglected histories of dispossession and resistance in such well-known destinations as Naples, Venice, Milan, and Matera.
The conversation will draw from the book as well as Io and Joyce’s recent artistic work, and will touch on the themes of national identity, collective narratives, and geographies of belonging.
Andrea Bagnato is an architect and writer. He has taught at Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam and the Decolonizing Architecture program at KKH Stockholm. Previous books include the collective volumes Rights of Future Generations (Hatje Cantz, 2022) and A Moving Border: Alpine Cartographies of Climate Change (Columbia, 2019).
Danae Io is an artist based in Athens and Rotterdam. Working in moving image, sculpture and text, she attends to processes and materials that mediate social relations. She holds a Master’s in Fine Arts from the Sandberg Institute, and is a co-founder of the research project System of Systems.
Joyce Joumaa is a Lebanese Canadian visual artist and writer based between Beirut, Montreal and Amsterdam. Her work focuses on microhistories within Lebanon, as a way to understand how past structures inform the present moment. Joumaa is a 2024-26 participant in the De Ateliers program in Amsterdam.
Introducing RADICAL PETS, a new work of experimental fiction commissioned by SAN SERRIFFE.
RADICAL PETS is an audio-novel co-authored by seven writers — NADIA DE VRIES, HABIB WILLIAM KHERBEK, DAISY LAFARGE, ELVIA WILK, TAYLOR LE MELLE, BECKET MWN, and MIA YOU — all of whom worked without conferring with each other, knowing only “the story so far” before beginning their chapters.
This approach was conceived in loose homage to L’HOMME QUI A PERDU SON SQUELETTE (1939), a collaborative novel written using the surrealist “exquisite corpse” technique, and reflects an interest in some questions around bodily proximity, interdependence and deviance that have lingered in the long shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The resulting “cojoined” narrative mixes new pleasures and old tricks. It’s a tale of a search for autonomy and affection that also knows how to do danger and disaster — and how to fetch humour from the everyday. It starts with a confession and ends with... well, that’s a surprise! Not even the authors (bar one) know how their spliced story plays out.
RADICAL PETS is narrated by LIMO HAIR and features theme music by RUUTU POISS.
The first part of the audio-novel RADICAL PETS is out today! Written by NADIA DE VRIES, this eponymous chapter is where it all starts.
Chapters will be released weekly via the San Serriffe website until the novel has fully unfolded and will then be available on other audio platforms.
