Real estate and Airbnb work has had me absolutely flat out lately, so this sunrise at Point Cartwright was less about chasing a portfolio image and more about shaking the rust off and getting back out there with the tripod.
No pressure, no client brief, just rocks, water, first light and seeing what happened.
I wanted the foreground rocks to carry the eye through the frame and hold detail right to the back, so this ended up being a 16 image focus stack through Helicon Focus. I also rotated a NiSi medium grad to the right side of the frame to create a subtle natural vignette and keep the eye moving toward the colour in the sky.
Finished with a light Lightroom edit and a touch of colour grading through the shadows and highlights.
Sometimes you forget how much you miss landscape mornings until you’re standing in them again.

Always on alert, always watching. One up high, one down low, both scanning like little security guards running the place. You can’t help but stop and shoot when they line themselves up like this.
I kept the edit subtle on this one, selected subjects and ran a few presets at around 20% opacity just to give them a bit more separation and pop without overcooking it. Let the detail and expression do most of the work.
Quick fact, meerkats live in tight-knit groups called mobs and take turns acting as sentries. While the rest forage, one stands guard just like this, watching for predators and sounding the alarm if needed.

Harsh midday sun, bright highlights everywhere, one of those scenes that can get away from you pretty quick. I ended up leaning into it with a heavier vignette to pull the focus back onto these two and calm the chaos in the background. Sometimes it’s less about perfect light and more about controlling it in post.
What I loved here was the interaction… that quiet moment between them, almost like a check-in before going back to feeding.
Quick fact, giraffes only need around 5 to 30 minutes of sleep in a 24-hour period, often in short bursts. Always on alert, always aware.

Lately it’s been squeezing them in between real estate jobs, chasing whatever light I can get. This one was right in the middle of the day out in the Glasshouse Mountains, not ideal on paper, but those shadows across the road and the way the light wrapped through the trees just worked.
I leaned into it… focused on the leading lines pulling you straight through the frame and gave it a warmer grade to bring a bit of that sunset feel back into the scene. Sometimes it’s not about perfect conditions, it’s about seeing something worth shooting anyway.
