There's a lot in this book worth mentioning, but I want to start with saying don't go into this expecting it to be a romantasy. Possibly it will end up feeling more that way in the next book, but for this one it was definitely more solidly in the dark academia, murder mystery area. Which, by the way, it shouldn't have surprised me with the title, but it DID surprise me how much death there was in this book π€£
Anyway, Viola, hates magic. So she pretends that she doesn't have any and her sister pretends that SHE'S the one who their powerful grandmothers magic was passed down to. When you have magic here, you study at Gorhail, which is our spooky academy, surrounded by woods that have various dangers lurking. The magic system is really cool, and depending on the type of magic you have, depends on the "relic" you have for the magic. Mortemagi (like Viola) wear cuffs, Aspieri have SNAKES (so cool). There's also another house of magic users called Arkani. As a rule, these houses are pretty separate and do their own things, and they DEFINITELY are not allowed to reproduce any "crossmages" as they are too dangerous.
There's a lot happening with this story, so it was easy for me to be absorbed and binge it over a few sittings. There's ghosts, a lot of history, necromancy, secrets and a slowly simmering love story as well. I really enjoyed this story, and many of the side characters were very interesting. I am looking forward to seeing where it goes in book 2.

This is a book I would have loved loved LOVED as a kid. The idea of fairies coming out at night (and maybe taking some vegemite toast) would have had me thinking about all the possibilities in the world. I love seeing bits of Australia with added fairies in this. This is a beautiful story with gorgeous illustrations that will be read over and over in this house.
Special mention to the moon and stars - Rex has decided these are his favourite pages.

We are most DEFINITELY in our park going era, so I was particularly excited to recieve this. The illustrations are so fun, and we love pointing out all the different things on the page that we see at the park. Swings, sandpits, slides and skateboards (ok and Rex was actually pretty stoked to find some bins as well π€£)

This is a more moody picture book, following the journey of a whale down into the darker depths of the ocean. It is very lyrical and it was nice to see some lesser known sea creatures be mentioned.

All about fruit! This book has many teaching moments about fruit and how they grow and can be spread. I love the fruit wheel of Fortune, where we can discuss what fruits (some we may have previously thought as vegetables) might be bitter, sweet or sour. It discusses fruits having seasons and about the vitamins and nutrients fruits contain. This is a book jam packed with information
