IRON(WO)MAN RACE RECAP — on period day one

Standing at the start line, I felt fit, strong and ready. But also nervous, excited and emotional. After months of training, early mornings and sacrifices, this was finally it.

The swim was wild. The water was so murky I couldn’t even see my own hand. I struggled with my breathing at the start and had to swim breaststroke for the first 200m. Then I reminded myself: ā€œYou can do this.ā€ Switched back to freestyle and kept moving.

T1 was uneventful apart from an extra bathroom stop thanks to period day one. 🄲

The bike started surprisingly well. Then the rain came, followed by nausea from swallowing water during the swim, period cramps and, to top it off, I lost part of my nutrition on one of the bumps.

From there, things slowly unraveled.

I was underfueled, couldn’t eat properly and suddenly people with flat tires were everywhere. At that point I had no idea about the metal pieces on the course — all I knew was that athletes were dropping out left and right and I was praying I wouldn’t be next.

The final kilometers of the bike were the lowest point of the day. I was cold, nauseous, exhausted and crying. I had already decided I wasn’t going to run.

But then I got off the bike.

Somehow everything calmed down.

I started the marathon crying, but once I got moving, my legs actually felt okay. My body was empty, but my legs were still willing to work.

Nutrition became impossible. Cola was the only thing my stomach would accept, and bathroom stops became part of the race plan.

It rained almost the entire day. I was soaked from start to finish. The marathon turned into a simple routine:

Run. Drink Coke. Bathroom stop. Repeat.

For 12:48:38, this race tested me in every possible way. It wasn’t smooth, pretty or easy.

But I kept going.

And then suddenly, the red carpet was there.

The finish line was there.

And after all the rain, tears, cramps, nausea and chaos, I crossed the line and thought:

F*** yes.

I am an Ironwoman. ā¤ļø

ā€žSalli Twickler you are an Ironman!ā€œ

Road to the most expensive backpack: completed. šŸŽ’ā¤ļø

Without a doubt, the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life.

There were so many moments throughout the day where I was close to giving up. So many moments where quitting would have been the easier option.

But I refused to surrender.

And somehow, after 12 hours, 48 minutes and 38 seconds, I became an Ironman.šŸ„¹šŸ

I’ll share a proper race recap and all the highs, lows and lessons from the day over the next few days. For now, I’m just incredibly grateful for everyone who was part of this journey.

Thank you! šŸ’Œ

1. I had to learn that food is fuel. Before Ironman training, I could skip a meal, eat late or just not think much about it. Once I started training 14+ hours a week, my body made the rules. I also learned to fuel almost every session properly instead of just getting through it. That alone made a huge difference… not only for performance during training, but especially for recovery afterwards. Some days it felt like my full time job was training, recovering and figuring out what to eat next.

2. Sleep became non negotiable. I used to be completely fine on around 7 hours. Now I need 10 hours every single night. And if I don’t get them, I notice it immediately. Recovery isn’t something that happens between sessions anymore it became part of the training itself.

3. Especially in the beginning, I had to learn how to slow down and actually listen to my body. Building an aerobic base meant putting my ego aside more often than I would have liked. Not every session is supposed to feel hard, and not every day is supposed to feel amazing. Sometimes the smartest thing you can do is slow down.

4. My body changed in ways I wasn’t expecting. Not necessarily smaller or bigger: just different. Stronger shoulders from swimming, stronger legs from cycling, a body that became better at doing things instead of just looking a certain way. Performance became the goal and aesthetics became a side effect.

5. Confidence started to come from keeping promises to myself. Every long ride, every early morning swim, every run I didn’t feel like doing added another layer of trust. Not because I suddenly felt unstoppable, but because I proved to myself over and over again that I could keep showing up.

6. My priorities shifted. I’ve never structured my life around one goal this much before. There were plenty of side quests, work trips, setbacks and weeks where training was far from perfect. But no matter what was going on, the Ironman stayed the priority. Every decision somehow came back to one question: will this help me get to that start line ready?

Everyone’s journey is different but be aware that this will change a lotšŸ«‚āš”ļø
