A few weeks ago, mid-Atlantic, we had 4-meter seas, wind on the beam, and out of nowhere… a spermwhale rolled up beside us. Not the calm, glassy-ocean kind you see on documentaries, this was spray, swell, and 25 tons (maybe more?) of whale muscle moving in sync with the waves. Surreal and enchanting!
⛵ Fast forward to now: we’re in the Bay of Biscay. Day one? Big following seas, plenty of wind, and a boat that never stopped moving. Today? Flat-ish water, light breeze, and a pod of dolphins riding our bow. That’s more our style here, we’re happy to keep Biscay orca-free, thank you very much 🤭.
🇫🇷 We’re aiming for France, then through the Channel and finally home to the Netherlands after 7 years. If the wind changes on Thursday, we wait. Because at sea, patience isn’t optional, it’s survival.

⛵ 25 NM out on our ocean passage from São Miguel to Faial, we lost steering. Hydraulic fluid leaking, no pressure, drifting helplessly. What do you think? Are you helped at sea? Well no. Only option: abandon ship and saved by a liveboat. Or a towing service that would cost 22,000 euros. No way, not for us! Don't count on help, you have to rely on yourself.
🤿 Bart Jan (our youngest son and hero) dove under the boat, rigged a line to the rudder.
☺️ At 4 a.m., in pitch darkness, we docked back in Ponta Delgada, same spot we had left the day before.
🐍Later we replaced all the hydraulic hoses.
🌊 grab 10 lessons we learned from losing steering at the ocean:
1. Stay calm under pressure:
Your mindset matters more than anything in a crisis. Breathe. Think.
2. Always have an emergency steering plan:
Know how to rig a backup system before you need it. Improvisation is good, but preparation is better.
3. Check your hydraulic system regularly:
Weak hoses and connections can fail without warning.
4. Have spare hydraulic oil on board:
But know: topping up doesn’t fix a leak. It just buys time, maybe!
5. Understand what rescue services actually offer:
Don’t assume they’ll tow you. Evacuation may be their only option...
6. Don’t give up your vessel easily:
If your boat is still afloat, fight for her. Think long-term, not just short-term safety.
7. Use teamwork to stay functional:
Communication and calm roles on board make the difference between chaos and control.
8. Know your winches, lines, and anchor points:
They may become your emergency steering system one day.
9. Prepare for nighttime arrivals:
Navigating into port in the dark after a crisis is a challenge on its own. Make sure lights, radar, and bow thruster work.
10. Fix it right after the crisis is over:
Don’t just patch it up. Do the full job: replace hoses, inspect the system, and learn from every weak link.

Easy, right? Except the boat was rolling, the pan was sliding, and our gimballed stove felt more like a rodeo ride than a kitchen.
We always end up laughing, because somehow under ocean conditions even the simplest meal feels like a challenge worthy of a medal.
⛵ For fellow sailors planning your next crossing, here are 5 galley survival tips we swear by:-)
1.) One hand for the pan, one hand for yourself. (Yes, that’s a thing.)
2.) Secure everything, if it can slide, it will slide.
3.) Keep it simple. There’s no shame in that peanut‑butter sandwich.
4.) Pre‑chop & prep before the sea gets rough.
5.) Always laugh when it goes wrong. Saltwater seasons everything, including your sense of humor.

Happy bunch on the foredeck and a bit of European Hawaii. Due to busy times, less time for IG (sorry guys we promise to post more often:-)
❤️ May and June brought something truly precious aboard our ship: our family.
From the flat lands of the Netherlands to the volcanic peaks of São Miguel in the Azores, our beloved crew: the children and little granddaughter Mera Sofie. They flew over to reunite with us. And oh, how we had missed them.
🍹 We laughed, we hiked, we feasted (a lot), and we filled our ship with a wild and wonderful mix of love, crumbs, backpacks, and toy animals.
Quality time? Absolutely. Peace and quiet? Not so much, and we wouldn’t trade it for the world.
🌴 São Miguel, often called the Hawaii of Europe, truly lives up to its nickname. And yes, since we’ve actually sailed to Hawaii, we’re in a position to say: the comparison is no joke.
The lush, fern-draped hills. The volcanic craters turned mountain lakes. The cloud forests that feel like something out of Jurassic Park.
We fell head-over-heels for the giant umbrella ferns, the steaming hot springs we swam in (without boiling ourselves), and the explosion of green everywhere.
Tea plantations, waterfalls, crater lakes... and drone footage of all of it thanks to our eldest son, who took to the skies while we took to the trails.
💞 And Mera? Our tiny adventurer. With her life vest securely strapped on, she turned the ship into her personal playground, investigated every winch and rope, and ruled the deck like a proper sailor-in-training.
The best part? She somehow managed to boss us all around with the authority of a seasoned captain haha and the charm of a two-year-old.
After months of solitude and sea miles, having our family fill the boat with noise, love, was a blessing.
Now they’re gone again, and the ship feels both quieter and a bit too big.
But our hearts? Full ❤️
