This time of year pulls me back to 2021, when we set sail from mainland Europe toward the Canary Islands on the first leg of our Atlantic crossing. There was a thrill in embarking into the unknown, yet an overwhelming sense of coming home, as the Canary Islands and the Atlantic Ocean was were where we planted the seeds of our sailing adventure. The anticipation of reaching a distant shore by our own strength, guided only by the will of the boat and the ocean, creates a magic that’s nearly impossible to replicate. Now, as autumn settles in, I feel an ache for that journey once more, a longing to chase distant horizons and feel at home in the vastness of the Open Ocean.
Dont get the wrong idea here, this trip was one of the most challenging, if not the worst one physically and mentally. We experienced pretty strong winds and very high waves at a terrible angle that gave me nausea and hallucinations due to my lack of sleep. Only half a day into the trip, approximately 8nm off Morocco we had a traumatizing incident with two migrants adrift and assisted with their rescue. Yet despite or maybe because of all the horrors, my memory of our arrival, seeing the gentle volcanic slopes of La Graciosa on the horizon and the feeling of accomplishment when we dropped anchor are what makes this trip so special. The one we will remember forever 💙
