Apartheid Free Communities & OLIVE Collective, one of our AFC signatories, are hosting our 6th AFCafe on July 22nd! In conversation about remembering and rebuilding beyond colonial and capitalist food systems, we are honoured to have Elder Jim Leyden, an Indigenous land defender and knowledge keeper of Anishinaabe and Irish-Italian ancestry, and Izzedin Bukhari, a Jerusalem-based Palestinian chef, storyteller, and founder of Sacred Cuisine.

What does it mean to live with right relations? What can we learn from traditional, ancestral, and spiritual wisdom to transform our ecocidal systems toward ones that nourish life for seven generations to come? Through conversations connecting Turtle Island and Palestine, this event invites you to explore food relations that not only feed our bodies, hearts, and souls, but also care for the land and other lives, nurturing ecological and cultural continuity and bringing us closer in the path of liberation.

Join our 6th AFCafe for this thought-provoking and insightful discussion alongside a plant-based meal (Mariam’s Lebanese Cuisine) and good company. Proceeds will go into covering the costs of the event. Anything beyond expenses will be donated to Wilp Aasosxw (dog sanctuary on the Gitxsan Lax’yip) and Plant the Land (food justice and mutual aid work in Gaza).

Have a taste for justice and human rights? Amnesty International will be releasing a new online cookbook, “Recipes of Resilience: Flavours of Palestine.” This free digital cookbook brings together eight Palestinian food creators from around the world – each sharing treasured recipes and stories.

Flavours of Palestine is a window into a people, a culture, and a history often overlooked. Through rich, traditional recipes and moving personal stories, this collection invites you into the homes, memories, and lived experiences of Palestinians around the world.

You’ll discover how food connects to identity—how the scent of za’atar, the warmth of bread, or the ritual of a shared meal can carry generations of meaning, especially in the face of displacement and loss.

Behind every dish is a story—not only of hardship, but of strength, love, and joy. This book is a celebration of Palestinian culture, a reflection of community resilience, and a powerful reminder that food can build bridges where walls divide.

These eight food bloggers, content creators and chefs have generously opened their hearts and kitchens to share more than just recipes—they’ve shared lived experiences shaped by love, memory, and the struggle for justice.

Their voices remind us that resilience isn’t about enduring hardship in silence. It’s about community. It’s about joy. And it’s about preserving culture in the face of erasure.

Savory semolina upma(porridge) eaten as breakfast dish in south India. Made with ghee but can be vegan. Mustard seeds, curry leaves give it a special aroma. I added turmeric for health with black pepper but not traditionally used. This is made for chef Izzeldin to try. Also for an almost two year old neighbor who loves upma and all my curries. Hmmm when did my hands get old and fat🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
