Landscape of JAPAN: The Sky Runway of the Northern Alps ☁️🏔️

Have you ever walked on a runway in the sky?

Mt. Sugoroku is one of the most breathtaking destinations in the Japanese Alps. Unlike the sharp, rocky peaks usually found in this region, the summit area features a massive, flat, and wide ridge known among hikers as the "Sky Runway."

Walking along this peaceful trail with a perfect, front-row view of the iconic Mt. Yari (the "Matterhorn of Japan") right in front of you is a truly magical alpine experience.

📌 SAVE this trail guide for your ultimate Japan trek:

📍 Location: Mt. Sugoroku (双六岳), Northern Alps, Gifu/Nagano

⛰️ Elevation: 2,860m (9,383 ft)

📊 Difficulty: Advanced. The trail itself does not have highly dangerous rocky sections, but it is a long, multi-day trek requiring solid physical endurance.

⏱️ Time: Typically a 2-day or 3-day trek starting from the Shinhotaka Onsen trailhead.

⛺️ Where to stay: Sugoroku Goya (双六小屋) is a fantastic mountain hut located perfectly at the pass. Treat yourself to a warm meal and rest before the final push to the summit!

🚐 Pro Tip: The public parking at the Shinhotaka trailhead fills up incredibly fast. Sleeping in your van the night before is the smartest strategy to secure a spot and start your long hike right at dawn.

Landscape of JAPAN: The Sacred Mountain of Iron Chains ⛓️⛰️

Looking for an epic alpine adventure in western Japan? Look no further than Mt. Ishizuchi.

Standing at 1,982m, it is not only the highest peak in Shikoku but the highest mountain in all of Western Japan.

Known for centuries as a sacred mountain for ascetic practices, its most famous feature is the series of massive iron chains (Kusari) dropping down nearly vertical rock faces. Climbing these chains to reach the sharp, dramatic peak of Tengudake is a thrilling experience you won’t find anywhere else. 🦅✨

📌 SAVE this ultimate trail guide for your Japan bucket list:

📍 Location: Mt. Ishizuchi (石鎚山), Ehime Prefecture, Shikoku

⛰️ Elevation: 1,982m (6,503 ft) Highest in Western Japan!
📊 Difficulty: Intermediate. The final rocky ridge requires focus and good balance, but the views are absolutely worth it.

⛓️ The Chains (Pro Tip): Do you have to climb the extreme vertical iron chains? NO! There are safe, well maintained detour stairs built specifically for regular hikers. You can completely skip the rock climbing and still reach the summit!

⏱️ Time: Approx. 4.5 - 5.5 hours round trip (if you use the Ishizuchi Tozan Ropeway to skip the lower forest section).

🚐 Access: The ropeway base station is easily accessible by car or camper van.

Are you brave enough to try the iron chains?

I had the opportunity to direct and shoot a promotional film for the OM SYSTEM OM-3.

The video is currently being shown at major electronics stores across the Kanto and Kansai regions in Japan, as well as through OM SYSTEM’s digital advertising.

To showcase the OM-3’s IP53 weather sealing, I filmed in outdoor environments across northern Thailand.
Its lightweight and compact design made it an ideal companion for travel.

If you happen to see it in-store or online, I’d love to hear about it.
