This year, too, the water temperature in Okinawa was slower to rise than usual. Even in May, it was only 23°C. I heard that it had once reached nearly 25°C in April, but then dropped by about 2°C afterward. Perhaps because of this, I feel that I encountered many larvae and juvenile fish that I do not usually see very often.

This is a juvenile oarfish, about 10 cm in body length, which we often encounter during blackwater dives. As always, no matter how many times I see one, it still makes me happy.

In May, off Kume Island, I encountered what was by far the most exciting organism of the season: a larval whalefish, family Cetomimidae. Its tapetail-type streamer extending from the caudal fin was striking, and its vivid pink body, together with the long pelvic fins (approximately half the standard length) composed of five fin rays, made it exceptionally beautiful. Needless to say, it was the most beautiful larval-stage whalefish I have ever encountered.
Other whalefishes also appeared during the season, and although the data are still limited, April and May off Kume Island seem to offer a relatively high chance of encountering whalefish larvae. Around 20 species of whalefishes are currently known. Their larval stages are not yet fully understood, but pelvic fins are known to be present in several larval forms. These fins are lost during metamorphosis as the fish grows, and are absent in adult females.

A super rare larval Acanthonus armatus (~40 mm).
Observed drifting in the dark waters off Kume Island, Japan.

This species is a bathypelagic cusk-eel, with adults reaching up to ~38 cm. Even at this early stage, the characteristic elongation of the 3rd–5th pectoral-fin rays is visible.

It’s hard to imagine that this tiny, delicate form will eventually grow into a rugged deep-sea fish.

This is an extremely rare in situ photographic record.
Based on its meristic characters, this larva is presumed to be a species of genus Plectranthias.

It was observed off Kume Island, near the surface at a depth of approximately 16 meters, over waters 1,600 meters deep.

From its external appearance, the stomach is visibly filled with what seems to be fish eggs.
