From rising #RutgersLaw 2Ls Maya White and Emely Cespedes: A very special thanks to Immigrant Rights Clinic staff Pina Cirillo and Sylvia Santos for putting so much into making this El Paso, Texas trip a memorable and rewarding experience for students with a passion for immigration law!

We spent our first day visiting landmarks around El Paso, including Chamizal National Park, which is divided in half by the U.S./Mexico Border. Many locals told us about what life was like before the wall between the two countries was built.

When we arrived to Las Americas (the non profit immigrant advocacy organization we partnered with for the week), we dove right into introductions, research projects, and potential client reviews.

Nearly every day was spent researching legal relief for clients and meeting with detained individuals in El Paso Service Processing Center and Camp East Montana. These experiences allowed us to work face-to-face with real clients, learn the ins and outs of immigration law and how it is rapidly changing, and put our legal research and writing skills to the test.

In addition to the work, we enjoyed some of the area’s delicious traditional Mexican food. We were even invited to sit in on the El Paso Chapter of the National Lawyer’s Guild’s lunch meeting.

Midweek we visited Abara, a non-profit organization that creates connection at the border through relational connection, experiential learning, and border response efforts. We enjoyed learning about the influence the border has on life in El Paso and how immigration shapes the community.

We ended the week with a final reflection meeting with Las Americas staff, where we went around the room and shared what had impacted us most that week.

The El Paso, Texas trip was not only a rewarding experience but it was also incredibly memorable. It was filled with good memories, tough lessons, new friendships, delicious foods, and great people. This trip is truly one we will never forget. Thank you to Pina and Sylvia, Las Americas, and Abara for making this trip one to remember!
We were overjoyed in welcoming students with past week.

Students were able to learn firsthand about the work we do at Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center, including conducting intakes, supporting clients through the immigration process, and visiting individuals in detention.

It was inspiring to see future advocates engage with our community and deepen their understanding of the realities immigrants in the borderlands face every day. We hope to have you back soon!

πŸŽ“ Wrapping up our series on the #RutgersLaw Class of 2026 with the inspiring story of Bonnie Goldman. Her journey to a law degree isn’t traditional and that’s what makes it so powerful. The oldest law student in the Class of 2026 turns 69 in June.
