Every day, Maeve brings such joy, love, and laughter to our lives. She is truly the most inherently happy animal I have ever met, and the most expressive too. I have never and will never stop marveling at her, and how she completely shatters every expectation and norm out there for a high content Wolfdog. Maeve has never met a stranger, approaches every situation with confidence, and lives for her family. She is truly 1 in a million, and I am honored to be her mother.
Beyond the humans who adore her, Maeve is the most beloved and perfect match for Faelen. He truly came alive the moment they met, her tiny puppy body clambering fearlessly over him. Seeing how perfectly they complete each other has been one of the great joys of my life.

This year has been such an adventure, and I am so grateful for every moment your enormous shadow walks beside mine. I do not have words to describe how I love you.
Our bond is a sacred agreement that we will give each other everything we’ve got.
For Faelen, I have devoted every scrap of my energy, time, love, and commitment. I have changed career paths, moved to different states and now a different country to find the life he will thrive in. I have given up on any idea that my life belongs to myself alone. My purpose is to ensure he and Maeve are safe and joyous, that they remain innocent of all the horrors of the world. That we enjoy as much of the world as possible; so far, we’ve seen a lot.
For me, Faelen has given his trust. His love, and his devotion. This is not as a dog gives their obedience. I will never have that from him, and nor do I want it. Faelen is not a pet to be commanded. His strength of character and body could easily overpower any human he wished. And yet every day he chooses to be gentle, to be cooperative, to be kind. I see every moment where he chooses love and trust over stubbornness or instinctive fearfulness. I often marvel at just how different an animal he could easily choose to be if he wished.
7 years ago now, I held him for the first time and felt his quivering puppy body relax into mine, his fear turn into contentment. He gifted me with his trust, and years of learning and loving each other has solidified that tenuous thread into the strongest bond I have ever known.
I try my hardest for Faelen and Maeve every day. And he tries his hardest for me too.
Thank you Faelen, for walking this path through life with me, a path that you irrevocably changed. Thank you for choosing me.
And thank you to everyone out there who has followed and loved this boy all this time too.

Faelen and Maeve responding to a sanctuary-wide howl. Maeve almost always waits for Faelen to howl first, then backs him up with such gusto ☺️
Wolves in the wild howl for many reasons; to find and reunite with their family, to search for a mate, to strengthen family bonds, and to ward off competing packs by demonstrating the size and strength of their pack.
The wolfdogs at the sanctuary howl for a variety of reasons too. However here, it’s more like a giant gossip circle, with each neighboring pack setting the others off. They may howl to indicate something interesting happening (such as a coyote wandering through), or simply to chat with their large extended “pack” throughout the sanctuary.
Regardless of reason, hearing the howls of 70+ wolfdogs together is a sound that touches the soul every time 😍

She is beauty.
And she is grace (except when she’s falling off logs, zooming into trees, or belly sliding on ice).
Jokes aside, Maeve is the queen of our little pack. Many see Faelen’s size and assume he calls the shots. In reality, Maeve more often leads him around. Not through force, but simply with her complete confidence. She leads by example. In different ways, they are equally dominant partners. And yet Maeve seems to always get things moving.
In wild wolf packs, it is indeed the dominant female who is ultimately very often the family’s leading member. No matter how big and strong the dominant male is, he is her partner and is beholden to her wishes. Female wolves decide where to den and birth pups, and therefore decide the location and movements of the entire pack. Their mission is to support her and the next generation of the family. The most successful “alpha” (or more accurately “dominant”) breeding female wolves are wise and strategic in their choices, nurturing and strong with their families, and a determined force to be reckoned with against any foes. The concept of a solo “alpha male” who leads the pack around is inaccurate. Wolves’ lives revolve around family. And the heart and the leader of the family is the mother.

Sometimes life comes at you so fast there is no time to consider the joys or fears of the future before that future is upon you.
Sometimes life comes at you unbearably slowly, a march of moments, leaving nothing but time to yearn for future possibilities and to imagine every possible pitfall in the way.
What does it feel like when both occur at once? Now I know.
Years ago living in California, I saw a documentary online, a short film about a woman who used to be a girl like me, a girl with a Wolfdog that she wasn’t fully prepared for. A girl who would do anything, fight tooth and nail, to keep her beloved animal safe and happy. Not only did she succeed in this, but through the process she rescued dozens more wolfdogs and devised and founded what is now easily one of the most incredible Wolfdog sanctuaries in the world.
I instantly knew back then that I needed to connect with her- - I had never felt so inspired and I felt viscerally that she might be one of the only people in the world who could understand me and the struggles and joys I had. I am so grateful that she quickly responded to my hopeful message, and we found much in common. We both became excited to someday work together, when the time was right.
Shortly afterwards, I began working at the California Wolf Center to gain experience, and searching for a more immediate professional option where Faelen and Maeve would be happy and safe. Almost exactly 2 years ago, we all 3 moved to Mission: Wolf, where I am so grateful to have had many wonderful experiences, learned many valuable skills and lessons, and became a much more qualified professional. And so happy to have found my partner Mike there. The past year was difficult and transformative.
As I began considering my life path, Georgina popped back into my life inquiring about the same- the time was right. And, she wanted Mike too, and would welcome Faelen and Maeve with us. My dream was coming true.
