First race after taking off the summer and then some (Boston marathon in April). My plan was to run some kind of ultra in September and I decided that 100K was going to be the distance. Palo Duro in Amarillo was the choice but that was cancelled due a storm in the area. I scrambled around online to find something for the beginning of October and finally locked in to a race in Louisiana, referred to me by another runner who would be there running the 50-mile.
The course started with a short out-and-back and then six 10-mile loops. The trails were really nice 👍🏽 remind me of Huntsville State Park minus the 8,000 roots and not as hilly. There was a lot of zig-zag sections with small rolling hills but in general this was a flat course. Highly recommended for a first ultra or if you want to PR a trail distance. The weather was basically perfect for this time of year. It was cloudy all day long and felt in the low-mid 70s.
Plan was simple: run easy, drink and eat a lot, rest a few minutes after every loop, repeat. I ran with a handheld except for 2 loops in the middle when it was warmer so I used the vest there. Another notable thing from this race was that I ran alongside the guy that ended up winning first place for most of the time. I think we ran 62 of 64 miles together which was wild. I just kept my plan intact as I didn't want to blow up too early but he stayed running along at my pace until there was about 3 miles to go. After the race he would say that I was essentially "pacing" him lol. You're welcome I'll bill you later. It was really cool running with someone all day, specially knowing that at these races you end up running a bunch of miles alone.
My plan was to drive in Friday night and just camp out at the park. The only problem was I got in late and the park was closed so I didn't really get any sleep Friday night. But that's how it goes sometimes! Shoutout to for the race tip and for letting me tag along some quick miles 🤜🏽🤛🏽 See y'all at the next crazy thing which is not too far out 💪🏽

It's been a really tough week after King passed away and I finally got around to making this short video. A big part of my running journey and this page is due to him. When I first got him I knew that this breed of dog required a lot of activity. King was a big part of me getting out there to run to keep him active. He was an excellent running partner. I remember at his peak he could do 6 and sometimes 8 miles with me. It truly was the best time we ever had along with our trips to the river.
I know this is gonna hurt for a long time but I'm so grateful for the 11 years wI had with him and hope that I can see him again one day. LOVE YOU KING ❤️
