In December 2019 we wrote a text called "izquierda izquierda derecha derecha delante detrás uno, dos y tres". (The page as a party space). That text was the starting point for some reflections collected in this book published by.Inside this book, there are, hidden like ghosts, 52 books published by us, 22 reflections and one drawing.
¨When we think about how a book should be, we always remember the La Yenca. La Yenca is a simple and catchy Spanish song that has become “the song of the summer” since 1965. Coincidentally, it was created by two Dutch brothers in Barcelona. The song’s lyric doesn’t speak about love, life or any conventional topic. It’s a kind of prescription or a user manual. On the one hand, it indicates how to move and dance; “left, left, right, right, in front, behind, one, two and three...” On the other hand, it guides us to a perfect predisposition. With phrases such as ¨everyone comes now without thinking¨, ¨it is not necessary to understand the music, in front, behind...¨, ¨we will mark the beat with our legs¨, La Yenca is not only establishing the conditions of attitude that the user should follow to have fun and enjoy in an unprejudiced way, but it was also an actual declaration of intent. Forget all your problems, don’t think too much and come here to have a great time. The song encourages play and partying to its fullest. And this is the attitude with which we want to understand our books. Not as objects full of prejudices and tedious protocols, but as artefacts of fun. La Yenca creates specific dance conditions and for us, artist’s books are like La Yenca. It doesn’t matter if you don’t understand the structure or how it should be read. It doesn’t matter, because just like La Yenca, the book has shed its classic function of communication. It has ceased to be the container of information and become the information itself. Hence, we can only enjoy a book, just like a party, if we go with the tendency that it will be the best party (book) of our lives.

This is a drawing made by Robert Filliou and George Brecht. We found ten years ago inside of their book "Games at the Cedilla, or the cedilla takes off" published by Something Else Press in 1967. This image has haunted us for all that time. The drawing seems to be the beginning of a game. The elements of the drawing are indicating the instructions for playing. It´s is like a word game, where each element conditions the next and so on. At the same time, the information received establishes that the game has a fun character. Don't think too much, the more absurd the better, continue playing and have fun. The "etc" indicates that we could continue playing:
"A ball is shot by a man who is carrying a flag. A flag that has been shot by a woman. A woman who has an elephant hat. An elephant hat that has been shot by a man. A man who is wearing a very very very long wig. A very very very long wig that has been shot by a woman. A woman who has a huge fancy umbrella. A huge fancy umbrella that has been shot by a man. Etc…"
If we had to describe what is a book for us, we could not explain it better than this drawing. This is why now we had to redraw that drawing. It's for a book about RUJA PRESS, 10 years making books. It will be published by and will be called, why not, "This is a project but we have forgotten what it was".
The book will be finished soon, but by the moment this weekend and during the Art Weekend Rotterdam, we will show all our publications (More than 50) at Print Room Space.
