EN: Issue 4 of the Chapter series brings together research and practice to explore how infrastructure can act as a driver of urban transformation. Developed through the work of 51N4E and NEWROPE โ Chair of Urban Transformation at ETH Zรผrich, the publication reflects on an infrastructural approach to design.
Through eight projects by 51N4E and four design perspectives developed by NEWROPE, the publication makes a case for investing in an infrastructural shift within urban design. Rather than starting from scratch, this approach builds on existing conditions, addresses multiple challenges simultaneously, and leaves space for future adaptations.
Both sensitive and bold, pragmatic and imaginative, an infrastructural design approach offers stability in complex environments while opening pathways for new uses and the appropriation of spaces. By presenting a diverse range of projects and reflections, this issue demonstrates how design can expand its impact, and how infrastructure can move beyond functionality to embody shared cultural and societal values.

A monument to industrial optimismโand its radical reinvention: this book tells the story of the transformation of the Palais des Expositions in Charleroi, Belgium. Built between 1948 and 1953 by architect Joseph Andrรฉ as a symbol of the nationโs progress, the vast complex fell into disuse after the decline of steel and coal. With a design approach rooted in radical sufficiency, AgwA and architecten jan de vylder inge vinck reveal the buildingโs inherent qualities. By removing much of the faรงade while preserving the floors, stairs, and roof, they transform the central hall into an open urban foyer that reconnects the structure with the city and the surrounding landscape.
Featuring photographs by Filip Dujardin, who documented the process over six years, and detailed, color-coded drawings by the architects that distinguish between original structure, demolition, and new construction, the book renders the buildingโs complex transformation strikingly legible. An introduction by Ilka Ruby and Andreas Ruby and insights from the architects, engineers, developers, and city officials present the project as a powerful model for rethinking existing architecture.
