Thank you to everyone who attended for paying your respects to Indigenous service and legacy, and to keynote speaker, Vietnam veteran James Canuto, for sharing your story.
It has often been overlooked that many Indigenous veterans were denied the same rights and entitlements as other Australians who fought for their country, at the same time, in the same wars. The Indigenous Veteransā Ceremony is an important opportunity to remind us of this injustice and aims to create a deeper understanding of our military history.

But adventure didnāt always come easy. James was classed as an āAssisted Aborigineā under Queensland law at the time and wasnāt allowed to leave his hometown without a permit. The military offered a way out.
At 20 years old, James enlisted in the Australian Army and was deployed to Vietnam. He worked as an armoured vehicle operator, driving APCs in dangerous enemy territory. James deployed for his second tour to Vietnam in 1971 as a Corporal, eventually returning to Australia in March 1972.
After two decades of service, he discharged from the Army in 1989 with the rank of Warrant Officer Class Two and returned to Yarrabah. In the years since, James has become a leader in the local community, helping to found Yarrabah RSL Sub Branch. This weekend, heāll be the keynote speaker at the 2026 Indigenous Veteransā Ceremony in Cairns.

āIn 2026, our sector is facing a significant evolution with many of the recommendations of the Royal Commission being enacted from 1 July.
