Another timelapse from a huge run of clear skies and ultra calm nights on New Zealand’s South Island last month. Due to forgetting to pack enough dew heaters I had to tape a USB hand warmer to the lens, I then left the camera here whilst heading off somewhere else. Such a clean timelapse.

Sunset into twilight in Gautín Gatchi Valley, Atacama Desert, Chile.
This time lapse had some of the craziest shifting color I’ve ever watched unfold. The desert glow slowly gave way to stars, with the sky moving from deep orange and red into soft cyan, blue, and violet tones.
Set to “Saved” by Deadmau5, from one of my favorite albums. It felt like the perfect match for this kind of surreal, dreamlike transition from day into night.
Shot on Sony A7S III with the Sony 16-35mm GM.
Edited with Lightroom, LRTimelapse, Adobe Premiere, Digital Anarchy Flicker Free, and FilmConvert. The hazy FilmConvert treatment really helped bring this one to life and gave it that soft, dreamy feel.

🇬🇧 It’s very hard to find a good spot for astrophotography in areas with a lot of light pollution, but I’m happy that my persistence led me to a result like this. The Milky Way is my favorite subject to photograph, and combining it with the beauty of the Adriatic Sea creates amazing results.

Yes. Finally. It took me three attempts but here it is:
The first star trail on an analogue camera I'm happy with.
Isn't it crazy? This is one single frame, I added nothing. I removed nothing. I didn't stack/stretch/blend at all. I just let my camera run after focusing to infinity (which is literally only turning the 60 years old Nikkor Focusing ring to its hard stop) and done.
But why isn't the image all white after 45 minutes?
The effect that makes this one possible is called reciprocity failure or "Schwarzschild Effekt" (German, literally "black shield effect"). The longer the film gets exposed to light, the less sensitive to light it becomes. 2 minutes on a digital sensor for example need 8 minutes on Fuji400 film to get the same brightness. For 8 minutes digital it takes 50 minutes on film!

Anyway, I found my shot and lit the inside of the church with a small light panel. I then decided I needed some light among the headstones, so I just chose a spot arbitrarily. While I was waiting for the long exposures to complete, I was pacing back and forth on the pathway, and while doing so I spotted a small wreath at the edge of one of the headstones, which caught my attention: Willie and Fred Le Quire, brothers. Both died young – Willie was few months from turning 2 years old when he passed; Fred was 42. I can’t say I know anything about the two, except that the Le Quire family was quite prevalent in Cades Cove history, and clearly someone still thought of them. At the base of the headstone was an inscription that struck me, “They live with us in memory and will forever more”.
My session wrapped up and so I loaded all my things and rode my bike out. It wasn't until I got home that I thought to myself, I should have lit the wreath! If you're curious, it's the headstone that appears closest to the church in the photo.
Entire image captured with a full spectrum modified Canon R5. Foreground is multiple 3.5 minute exposures, ISO 1600, f/5.6 for ambient light and then much shorter exposures for light painting. Sky is 15 exposures at ISO 1600, f/2.8 and 2.5 minutes each using a tri-band filter.

WHAT QUALIFIES as a "SINGLE" exposure?
1. A true single exposure (one shot).
2. A stack of single exposures (all with the same EXIF—no HDR exposures) processed as one image to reduce noise. No separate exposures for the foreground and sky.
3. A simple panorama made from single exposures, all with the same EXIF (no tracking, blending, compositing, HDR exposures, or separate exposures for the foreground).
4. A single exposure star trail, using the Long Exposure Noise Reduction mode (see page 174 of my "Milky Way NightScapes" eBook), or a star trails stack (all exposures with the same EXIF, and no separate exposure for the foreground).
5. A simple timelapse made from single exposures—all with the same EXIF.
No tracking, HDR exposures, compositing or blending (blending different exposures for sky and foreground).
NOTE: All the images in this post are mine, and are single exposures. Some shots use my LLL (refer to for a free tutorial) to add foreground detail, eliminating the need for a second blended exposure for the foreground.
