On 6 May 2026, the interprom athletics competition took place. Our cadets' athletes put up a good fight and did their very best to demonstrate what they had been training for all year. Some received special awards in recognition of their progress and efforts. Congratulations to the masters Polytechnics and the Special Division on their victory in this interprom competition.

On 6 May, the RMA awarded honorary doctorates to two exceptional scientists: Joseph Soeters, a renowned military sociologist, and Tony Arts, an eminent professor of turbomachinery. The awarding of these honorary doctorates took place during an academic ceremony held on the academy’s campus, attended by numerous senior representatives from the military and academic communities both from Belgium and abroad.
Literally meaning ‘for the honour’ in Latin, an honorary doctorate is the most prestigious distinction that a university can bestow upon an individual.
On Wednesday, April 29, the RMA was honoured to host Denis Van Weynbergh. He stands as the only Belgian skipper to have ever completed the Vendée Globe, a race widely regarded as the most prestigious long-distance sailing challenge in the world. It is not only a peak of competition, but also an incredibly dangerous and grueling race, which is why it is often called the ‘Mount Everest of sailing’. Due to this remarkable athletic performance, Van Weynbergh was invited to share his journey at our academy.
After a tour of the school, he spoke to cadets in the conference hall Frank De Winne about the hardships he faced both before and during the race. He spoke about the grit needed to attract sponsors, the challenge of keeping a team motivated, and how to harness a winner’s mentality. His leadership and engagement are admirable. Even though the world of professional sailing is far from the cadets' daily lives, his core message of perseverance landed with the crowd. The cadets could for example typically relate to his discipline by sleeping two weeks on ship, which they also got to have when sleeping a month in a tent.
The day concluded with a book signing in the Cafeteria, where cadets had the opportunity to engage with him in person. The conference was organised by the Blue Organisation Military Experience. This is a group that organises events ‘by cadets for cadets’. Even though their name would make you expect otherwise, they aren’t only concerned with military matters in the strict sense. Their scope extends to a variety of topics that might contribute to the formation of future officers.
Our 2026 gala ball was a greater success than ever! Last Saturday, the RMA came alive to the sound of music, and the party went on until the early hours.
Once again, a huge thank you to everyone who attended this splendid edition of our ball, and a special thank you to our sponsors. Thanks to you, this ball was truly unforgettable!
Military personnel from across Defence, including the RMA, gathered in Marche en Famenne from 31 March to 3 April to test their marksmanship during the National Championship Defence (NCD) Shooting 2026. A squad from the RMA Shooting Team, which included Prince Gabriel, managed to finish in 4th place. Congratulations to the whole team for this outstanding performance!
The Military Obstacle Run (MOR) is a competition in which the promotions compete against one another on a demanding course: 14 km for the men and 9 km for the women, with no fewer than fifty obstacles! The most recent edition took place on 1 April.
More than a simple endurance test, this race severely challenges the participants’ physical capabilities and their ability to push beyond their limits. But physical performance alone is not enough: effective communication, strong team spirit, and constant mutual support are essential to overcome the obstacles swiftly and reach the finish line as quickly as possible!
Recently RMA cadets took part in the 24th Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC) Competition for military academies at the International Institute of Humanitarian Law in Sanremo, Italy. Participants were challenged to collaborate in multinational teams, navigate complex operational environments, and find principled, workable solutions to difficult legal and moral dilemmas, all within the fast paced simulation of a Joint Operational Center.
Our cadets rose to that challenge with remarkable professionalism, curiosity, and teamwork, together with 27 other national teams from different parts of the world. They impressed not only with their legal reasoning, but with their openness to learn from peers across borders. In the end, two of our teams won a medal. Congratulations to all!

Bertrand Hayez.
The new class of the RMA Preparatory Division also took part in the ceremony, which provided the opportunity to award the special TPCI prizes, recognising the candidates of the RMA Preparatory Division who achieved the best results in this year’s entrance examinations. Congratulations to them!
