At the ceremony, Sardar Pashaei accepted the award on behalf of the Iranian people and paid tribute to courageous female political prisoners such as Zeynab Jalalian. He remarked that tonight, women like Zeynab Jalalian should have been standing in his place at the ceremony to receive this award.

They described hospital floors slick with blood, children with severe pellet and gunshot wounds, and bodies rushed in from nearby streets. They also told us how security forces have tried to identify and detain the wounded and how medical staff continue to take steps to protect them. Several also shared medical documents, including X-rays, photographs and patient records, that they have quietly compiled because - as one doctor told us - the authorities “want to sweep it under the rug.”
Many also called for help from the international community - to protect them, their patients and other Iranians calling for freedom; to hold the regime accountable; and to prevent a similar atrocity from ever happening again.
I’m deeply grateful to those who helped us with this reporting- especially the courageous doctors and nurses in Iran who have risked their own safety to help people in need and to share the evidence of the massacre beyond Iran’s borders.
Yet they are all so humble. Even as many are reeling from the trauma they witnessed, they say they are inspired by the unarmed Iranians who were injured and killed in the streets.
They have taught me a great deal about quiet courage, compassion and dedication to serving humanity.
